Title: OBD
Post by: Brizee67 on February 9, 2017, 20:44
I've trawled old topics but can't find an answer to my query hence my question now.

I need to get an OBD reader and I know I can get a £10 unit from fleabay which is compatible and I'm tempted to just buy one but I noticed a Bluetooth OBD unit called ELM327. It looks ideal although the description states that it's only compatible with Android OS.  I've been onto the App Store and there is an app called EODB Facile (similar to Torque) which is what is used in conjunction with the ELM327.

Why would Apple make an app for that unit if it wasn't compatible?

Is anyone else using an ELM327 and EODB Facile with an iPhone?

A cheap reader from ebay will do the job that you need it for, ie eml codes. I have no idea whether the bluetooth ones work with apple, but as far as I can see, unless you want realtime readings, then there is no real benefit to spending loads of money on one.

Hi Pete...yes you're right...done some research and there doesn't appear to be any compatible Bluetooth OBD devices that will work with an iPhone only Wifi.

I just thought I'd get more information from an App hence looking at the ELM327. I'll probably just opt for a straight forward plug in corded unit as at least it's guaranteed to work.

Where is the OBD port on the '2??

Keeper is bang on the money.

As we are talking comparatively small beer here, I have both options.
Stand alone reader and bluetooth obd dongle that hooks up fine and dandy with my andriod and torque app.
We are only talking acouple of bottles of wine all in.

Not forgetting JV has offered to read it for you which might only cost you a cup of tea and a biscuit.

It is very kind of JV to offer me some help...generosity seems to be the motto here and I really appreciate everyone's help...hopefully I'll be able to return the favours too.
I am just going to buy an OBD reader as it is something that I'm definitely going to use (for what I can see) myself or for anyone in the surrounding area that will benefit from it. I'll no doubt invest in both options because I'm a bit of a techy so it all really appeals to me.

And I know that I will need an O2 sensor sooner or later. [emoji6]

There is a android app called elmscan toyota.
The free version does everything the paid version does on our cars. (does more on other cars with other adapters)
It works with both the cheap chinese/ebay WiFi elm dongles I have.

Hi Beavis...thanks for the information but I have an iPhone which is the main issue really. That said I have found an ODB unit that uses wifi in conjunction with my iPhone.

Dash command costs more than a standard OBD reader...though it has to be said that it does look very comprehensive.
