Is there any real advantage to running an enlarged throttle body?
I was thinking of adding one when I go turbo
If anyone is after an enlarged throttle body, I will have one available shortly.
Funny enough... I was just talking to Nic about where to get one Nigel

Yeah I'd rather not pay the import/shipping s:) :) s:)
Drop me a line Nigel when it's off. I'm assume it's Nic's old Maxbore

Won't be any duty if the paperwork is done correctly.... Its a warranty reapir s;) ;) s;)
Do I remember an issue about a peculiar lack of engine braking after fitting a bored throttle body or am I making this up?
Quote from: "lamcote"Do I remember an issue about a peculiar lack of engine braking after fitting a bored throttle body or am I making this up?
I don't remember anything like that but mine had a lightened flywheel too which affects engine breaking.
I have been searching the forums and have found that in 2007 a certain Wabbitkilla said this about his bored out throttle body:
"With the TB alone response was quite interesting. You can hear the engine breathing deeper and throttle response was definitely quicker, especially when you were already carrying momentum. The wierdest thing was the reduced affect of engine braking. Adding the lightened flywheel and clutch brought some of the engine braking back which is kind of wierd but at the same time pleasing."
I haven't read all the thread, maybe this was eventually attributed to something else?
There is a company called Streetwerks that are offering bored out throttle body's.
Any contact details for them other than faecesbook?
moved this to its own thread to stop dirtying the intake test thread s:) :) s:) Scoundrels
Hmm.. 'enlarged throttle bodies' eh? Get them from some site on the net?? Perhaps this should only be discussed in private. Be warned - the effects are temporary.
Some of us need all the help we can get, temporary or not......

Example of Streetwerks urm work
Nic, just noticed your thread on Spyderchat.
You said you had to tweak the tps signal using the EMU, until you got the apexi pic. Is that still the case?
Can't do signal translation with the EMB so I'd be pretty stuffed for the enlarged throttle body
i would be interested in this myself. thinking of doing it myself, port and polish and knife edge. will get a spare case i mess it up. i think as long as you dont mess about with the seat of the butterfly flap shouldn't mess up tps reading? didn't a chap called custard do boring? Jacob

I will definitely take this off your hands if no one else wants it, myself and Tommyzoom have recently been in contact with Maxbore regarding sending one out to him for modification, so this would be perfect for us.
Just name your price s:) :) s:)
Too late s:) :) s:) tis mine hehe.
Did you check with Streetwerks? Their price si 165 I think. Might be close to Maxbore incl shipping and all that
No worries Patrick, wasn't sure if you wanted for definite as you mentioned possible compatibility issues with your EMB.
Haven't checked with SW as yet... will look into them.
Apologies for the revival but I noticed that the thread is less than a month old so I thought I could get away with it s:P :P s:P
Does anyone know the exact internal diameter of the enlarged throttle body vs standard? I have a very talented machinist at work who would give this a go if I asked him. I may end up taking the TB off my old '2 just in case I screw it up!
Quote from: "woodypk"Does anyone know the exact internal diameter of the enlarged throttle body vs standard?
I've just bought a 1zz TB from Streetwerks, it's gone from 55mm to a safe maximum of 59mm. That also includes a new larger butterfly valve to suit. The Maxbore retains the stock butterfly as far as I'm aware, not sure what the diameter is on those.
Maxbore has a larger butterfly as well. It has to. (https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20170323/976c5f4c69608e633d5c2ce71c9afee2.jpg)
Probably also about 59mm. Can't really go much wider.
Be careful with the gasket. It's a bit of a pig
OK thanks guys. Do you have an idea of what the material of the butterfly is? I know it seems a bit of a pig modifying this when I could just buy another, but at work I'm sure were capable of making things like this. Plus, it saves more pennies which I can use at the fuel slot machines.
It's not that easy but if you can get it done, all the better.
Need to bore out the body straight and even. Then get a brass butterfly cut. Then widen the slot in the spindle.
Great stuff.
All these things I should be able to do at work which is great. It's nice having access to a lathe, milling machine and all the parts, materials and tools you could ever need. Not to mention a willing machinist who's really into cars and motorbikes s;) ;) s;)
Thanks guys.
Streetwerks use Bronzed Aluminium for the butterfly, as I believe it's a touch stronger than regular bronze/brass.
Yeah I just had a look at their Facebook page. The more I think about it, the more I'm asking myself is it worth it on an otherwise fairly standard 1zz. Do you think it would make a great difference to throttle response times? I'm guessing even with a induction kit that it wouldn't make much if any power, but more smooth out the power curve/delivery.
Wouldn't say it's worth it
Probably not worth it on a largely standard 1zz, you'd be better off addressing the other restrictions in the system i.e free-flow intake/exhaust. But even then you won't get noticeable power gains, maybe a bit more throttle response as you say, and make a slightly better noise. In my opinion if you're serious about getting noticeable power gains from a 1zz then I'd start with the above and then look at a map-able ECU to get the most out of any other mods installed. End of the day there's no cheap/easy option for releasing more power from a 1zz (I know this from first-hand experience s:lol:  s:lol: )
You're probably right. For now, shnazzle's intake will be enough to keep me grinning i'm sure.

Haha! Now that seems like a modification worth doing.
15bhp for £12!?
Combined with one of these which I found out about this morning: m http://www.ebay.com/itm/2-5-INTAKE-SUPE ... Looks like I've been doing this engine modification thing wrong the whole time!!

Tbh good luck to them. Anyone stupid enough to go for it i dont want to be sharing the roads with.

Doesn't seem a worse hack than 'caps maf riser mod', and cheaper - what don't you like Scotte?
Ouch! At least the maf riser mod actually has some empirical evidence backing it up.
I only mean the air intake temp piggy back. Might get one.
I'll let you all know when I'm on the road with it [emoji3]
God knows what that fan thing is doing.
Ok, now I've read the feedback, might not bother [emoji20]

Picking this up again based on some FB comments.
I think it's definitely a worthwhile mod, and although I underplay mine (albeit it's a Maxbore and not Streetwerks) it certainly had made the throttle response instant and the noise absolutely magnificent.
The Hurricane intake takes credit for a lot of that, but comparing to Stewart@Boro's car with the same map on emanage piggyback and same intake, it does definitely flow better. You can hear it suck air a lot more.
Is it worth it on a stock setup? Probably not. You'll get benefits but probably not worth the outlay vs spending it on other things first (bracing, deposit on tyres, bushing, intake, manifold, etc).
Once you get a freer flowing intake and exhaust and perhaps a piggyback or standalone ecu, it's definitely a next logical step.
Probably would benefit 2zz converts more than 1zz.
