Title: Rear brake pipe
Post by: gtcc88 on March 26, 2017, 23:12
Hello all,

I was trying to fit some HEL brake hoses that I have ordered from TCB.

I thought it might be a simple day job until I snapped the driver side rear brake pipe near the joint connecting to the rubber pipe as I was trying to undo it.

Do any of you know the part number of this particular brake pipe? Or know where I could buy it from?

Many thanks in advance,

Gilbert

I think the details are here, but wait for someone more knowledgeable to confirm.

Would be easier to make up a small replacement piece of pipe rather than trying to fit a complete new one as there most likely one piece and wind around everything underneath the car !

Thanks both for the advice.

Judging by the amount of work involved in removing the entire pipe, I am going to have a go at making a short replacement section first and see how that goes.

Cheers

Good luck, but the original pipe work is extremely hard and will not form easily using the diy presses available. You may be forced to replace the entire length to the front of the vehicle.

steel pipes are easy to work with really.
heat the end you are going to shape until very hot, small plumbing blowtorch works fine.
don't set fire to you car.
personally find it best to then clean up then reheat.
the heating changes the steel, you don't need to work with it hot.
also where the steel has softened it'll rust real quick so paint it after checking it's good.

Thank you both for your input.

A bit of an update, I looked at the cheap diy vice I have originally ordered and it says it will only work on copper. So I did more research and found and bought a powerhand hand held flaring tool which many people claimed to work on steel. The key is to keep the pipe clean and the paint off the pipe.

I had a go this afternoon and here's how it looks.

This is where it was broken:

Here's the tool I got:

(http://i61.photobucket.com/albums/h64/gtccletsrace/ZZW30/IMG_20170331_134412_zpsscwdtrjz.jpg) (http://s61.photobucket.com/user/gtccletsrace/media/ZZW30/IMG_20170331_134412_zpsscwdtrjz.jpg.html)

The main challenge here was the short straight section which made it impossible to apply the tool above, so I had a quick go at using the cheap bench flaring tool
which had no chance as the pipe just slip off the vice. I ended up having to straighten the pipe so that I can apply the flaring tool with the new fitting. Another problem was that brake fluid kept coming out so I had a hard time keep the pipe nice and dry while clamping it up.

And voila!! A double flare.

But it didn't end here. I extended the pipe using a short copper section so that I can join the hard pipe and the braided hose at the original position, but it started leaking at the steel to extension joint. I ended up heating up and re-flaring the steel pipe and hoped that I can form a better flare that seals properly but still no lucky. Finally I attach at the braided hose directly onto the new steel flare and that seems to be ok so far.
