Title: New head unit
Post by: Standard on April 2, 2017, 18:08
Mrs Standard has got me an early birthday present (Pioneer FH-X730BT) and has said will get my some new speakers too.

Firstly, I assume it will fit in the old space on my PFL without issues?

What wiring adapter will I need for it to work?

Currently, I have only one of original speaker working (passenger door) what's likely to be causing this?

Yes, it will fit no problem. I made a video for access to the stereo, it's a bit involved.

Re unworking speaker - anything really. Could be blown mosses in the head unit, bad connection in the wiring, broken wiring in the door hinge or door, or simply an old knackered speaker. Send some voltage up the wires and test using a multimeter if you intend on using it, to check it's OK. It should be, it rarely fails. My bet is on clapped out speaker. Especially in convertibles they get wet and seize up.

Sounds like I'm taking the pee but it's not dialled over to one side on the balance is it? My lad did it on a car of mine when he was younger and I chased all sorts of things before working it out!

I watched your vijayo Joe, like your style, I swapped head units yesterday without needing to remove the HVAC panel but I'm missing the surround from mine, I'm assuming it got damaged or sold with a previous owner, so maybe that was why?
I'm going to have to look out for some kind of trim for it though as it's a bit hideous without [emoji53]

Cheers, that should help no end.

One of the bulbs has gone behind the heater controls, I assume that it would be a good time to replace them?

What are the correct bulbs and where do I get them?

Hi Standard I am thinking of getting the very same unit can I ask what wiring adapter did you use in the end?

I've not fitted it yet!

I'm not sure where you where thinking of buying it from but I got mine from Halfords for £100 (in store clearance).

It was my birthday yesterday so the Mrs gave me another present. I ordered the ISO myself about a week ago (fingers crossed it's the right one).

ISO looks correct, nice little set up

The ISO was only £3 delivered. Which reminds me I need to Ulphie a link.

I'm gonna try and get it installed this weekend... depends if I can be patient enough to get a cheap amp. Speaking of which, any recommendations? I'm doing this on a budget.

Did you ever get a response to this?
Sorry a bit off topic

When I get to mine I'll see if I can find an LED Alternative

Ok, somebody explain the need for the wiring adapter for me please? Preferably in daylight hours as I can't find anything related on t'internet. My 2 had an aftermarket head unit already and when I replaced that I didn't need any other cables so am I to assume they're already there? Or if I should want to go back to a similar double DIN to this one will I need to change the cables that connect my current, single unit? Please and thank you...

Your new head unit will just plug into the ISO. Nice simple swap

Cheers, I assumed that would be the case, the only time I've ever had to get an extra lead for a stereo was to connect steering wheel controls. I guess I've just been lucky [emoji2]

Right then, after originally thinking I had the wrong ISO connector (I was being a moron) I have wired it up it to see how it goes...

Good news! It lights up like a Christmas tree and I immediately discovered the issues with poor radio reception and drivers door speaker were being caused by the old head unit.

Bad news! I can't get the bloody cage to sit right and feels far from solid. And unless I'm being particularly thick, what are you meant to do with the pokey out bits in the picture? Isn't it meant to fit flush with the dash and plastic trim?   s:? :? s:?

Those black bits are different to mine but assuming they fit in a similar fashion, ditch the cage, screw the black bits directly to the head unit (it'll say somewhere in the instructions the length of screws to use) then refit to the car uprights. You might have to offer it all up first to get the right combination of holes but should get it better than the current set up!

But the prong things are part of the plates that screw in...

I was losing light so I'll have another look tomorrow.

Yeah, didn't notice the prong bit before, mine are shiny steel, flat plates but I'm also missing the facia/surround trim so assumed it was the mount for that?

Could be.

I'm tempted to leave it as it is until Saturday hope that someone can give me a hand but at the same time I want to do it myself to prove I'm not totally inept.

I don't think anyone would think that, a bit of good natured banter maybe but I'd hope nobody was that elitist on here. I think half the problem is the number of owners these cars have already had, hardly any are standard when you get them so you're more often dealing with someone else's pre fiddling!

I had similar issues when fitting a single din unit a couple of weeks back. I found the parts from a facelift model will be your friend. The sticky outy prongs attach to the surround from the PFL sony unit

The facelift brackets will allow you to mount the new unit level with the cupholder/ashtray assembly. Facelift surround is also needed to make it look stock

Parts are available at a dealer but expensive - I priced them up last week at a little shy of £70 - managed to get used from a breaker for a LOT less

Brackets from a facelift -  m http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/00-05-TOYOTA- ... Sw42JZCQGT (http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/00-05-TOYOTA-MR2-SPYDER-OEM-RADIO-STEREO-CD-PLAYER-MOUNTING-BRACKETS-BOLTS-/272655194639?hash=item3f7b841a0f:g:ghwAAOSw42JZCQGT) m  - I know it's a US listing but it gives an idea what to look for

I never thought to not use the cage and screw into the metal panels but that just means that the prongs will still poke out.

I've fitted a few head units over the years and never had this kind of faff!
Title: Re: New head unit
Post by: beavisrules on May 23, 2017, 10:52
Aren't the prongs also just held on with a couple of screws?
Put the screws back in after removing if that works.
If you had the Pre facelift sony radio fit the surround from that if the pioneer one doesn't

Though your new radio should use the same mounting your old one had , and you only need the bare radio without the extra pioneer fitting items.

I think that's what I'm doing wrong. I've convinced myself I need the cage (like every other stereo I've fitted).

I'll play around some more when I get home.

I've not had the cage on either of mine. I simply stole the 4 screws and the holder from the stock radio and used those.
Radios have the correct screw holes in the right places already.

Shouldn't make the difference though. The radio that came with the car was bizarrely a PFL.

Sorted it and I changed the dash bulb while I was at it.   s:) :) s:)

The bits I could t get my head around were actually NOT using the cage and using the original surround instead of the one that came with a the new head unit.

Now to fit the speakers... I can only imagine the pigs ear I'm going to make of that!  s:wink:  s:wink:

That's the easier bit. You did buy some deadening didn't you? That alone made a huge difference. All that bass pinging around an empty door shell doesn't sound brilliant.
