Title: Offside rear caliper
Post by: Stevie_P on April 4, 2017, 11:27
Hi All

Took the MR2 roadster in for an MOT and it failed on the handbrake (surpise surprise).
Local Toyota specialist reckons the cam has failed in the offised rear caliper which sort of makes sense as last year I had the nearside caliper and both handbrake cables changed so there really isn't much left to change.
Last year they had a right job getting the correct caliper (car was literally in the garage a month due to it being a warranty claim on the caliper).
So this is a plea for anyone who know the best place to get a replacement for a 2001 PFL model and / or if anyone has a good / new one going spare then willing to buy.

Cheers all

Steve

I think that The Other Stu has a set of refurbs available, but he may have sold them by now. Maybe worth a pm though.

Just had another thought that his might be FL. Alternatively, give Bigg Red a call, they might be able to help.

Have you looked at rockauto.com? US based, but they're cheap and efficient and have huge stock.

Any reputable high street motor factor can get a caliper either the same day or overnight.

You could simply remove the cam in situ and if it is indeed worn, build the lobe surface back up with a weld and dress it back. From my experience to date, the spindle / cam is relatively soft.

I got a refurb within two days for my pfl - was 80 plus core charge. From brakes international which was a firm I heard of from here. I toyed with the idea of fixing the seals till I realised I would likely find something else wrong. Do both I reckon as the other is presumably the same age I found offside was actually worse so was pleased I did both.

Thanks for the input everyone.
Garage managed to get one. Problem was the bloody thing had stretched the handbrake cable as well.
The reall bummer was this was changed last year (and you know what a job that is!!)
Should be all good for the MOT though. Think it's at 30% now and the MMOT pass is 16% so all should be good...
