I've been looking for and saving for a standalone ecu since my engine swap last year. I've contacted the usual suspects but the price once mapped is well over £1000 (and most of these have limitations) and my preferred option g4 link monsoon is pushing £2000 fitted and mapped.
So I'm planning on going to Motorsport Electronics over the next two weeks as they have been developing plug and play standalones, with a life time warranty for various cars to see if I can pursuede them to build one for ours. Their pnp ecu are between £600-£700 and come pre mapped depending on spec so only a small time is required for fine tuning.
Does anyone have any experience with this company? What sort of spec would people want? Any specific questions I should be asking? Etc etc

Have you considered ECUmaster?
Their standalone is fully featured and doesnt cost the earth.
In an ideal world i would go link because that is what the mapper i will use prefers.
I want an ecu with knock and that accetps egt and afr also traction control would be nice.

Not for v6 I'm afraid! Looked at ecumaster and they will build me a pnp harness with the ecu for around £800. My problem is a fairly short warranty, not exactly clear if I can alter the lift point and I can't find anyone who has actually mapped one! The thing I like about motorsport electronics is that they are designed and built in the uk and they also fit and map them. It's alot of money to not make the right decision.

Emerald K6 is designed and built in the UK if thats your thing.
Link has the advantage that everyone maps them but the cost by the time you add loom sensors etc is an awful lot.
I think 800 with harness is pretty good for the ecumaster.
Think there is a guy on twobrutal that maps them.
The guy who tuned my Megasquirt uses Motorsport Electronics ECU's for his MX5 projects and seems very happy with them. I would check and see if they support the crank and cam profiles for our engines, it's also worth going through the MR2 circuit diagrams and working out how many inputs/outputs there are, and what signals they expect. The standard ECU also controls the dashboard (temperature gauge, Charging indicator, Oil pressure light and bizarrely the handbrake light, I couldn't find any off the shelf solution to this and ended up making a CAN bus adapter for the dash as a temporary solution), and also the immobilizer.
I guess the big question is what the gain is vs the cost and effort, unless the engine has been modified to the point that the standard ECU is no longer able to control it, then your going to be spending easily over £1000 (ecu + mapping + fitting) and probably not gaining much in return...
