Post by: Garfy on April 22, 2017, 12:07
Good day all, just worked out how to remove the cover thingy under bonnet.
Found the attached picture and expect I should do something about it   s:roll:  s:roll:
Got some bearing grease, would it be just attack it with a wire brush and lube up (Favourite Saturday afternoon saying   s:oops:  s:oops:  )

Been looking back through other posts, seems this is a universal joint a and has something to do with the steering   s:) :) s:)
The top part has about a 1/4 of an inch play in it which moves the steering wheel about 1 inch, I haven't noticed any issues with steering, it definitely goes around corners   s:D :D s:D
I think it's acceptable just a little rusty so am thinking clean it up and grease will be fine for the moment (with a look to replace if I have steering issues in the future)  s:) :) s:)

Sadly this is a terminal failure. Any play is unacceptable, and if that UJ fails you have no steering!!!

Replacement pattern parts are available from TCB parts for about a£100 posted, I think he may sell through eBay too. Search 'MR2 lower universal joint". It's not a hard swap.

Might be an idea to clean up the power steering pipes while you're down there too.
