Hi Folks,
I'm trying to understand a bit of wiring here for the EDFC controller, I need to find the following cables (ideally behind the radio?) to tap into.
- Constant power supply ( Do I need to run this directly from the battery? Or does anyone know of something more convenient?
- Accessory power supply (this is basically live when ignition is turned on? - so should be behind the radio somewhere!)
- Illumination power supply - what is this? I found a cable in the toyota manual describing an instrument panel wire... is this what it needs to tap into?
Thanks very much for you insights!
Cheers,
John
John,
My mod free 2 has only a sat nav and dash cam. These require power outputs that I took from the fuse box in the passenger door jamb.
Your handbook will tell you which fuse is which , select one and use a piggyback fuse from eBay to give you the power you want when you want it .
Batt+ : Could try the clock wiring
Ignition live: fuse box or ciggie lighter
Illumination: Bit obvious but...the illumination wiring s:D :D s:D Easier would be a wire to one of the center console lights.
The radio will have a switched live and a permanent live.
Welcome to my voyage of discovery!.. of what appears to be the bleeding obvious to most people!
1 - I'd not heard of a piggy back fuse before! Thank you! This will make things Waaaaay neater.
2 - Thanks for the clarification on the "illumination" I've just arrived at that conclusion! Why don't they just call it what it is! i.e. main beam wiring?
3 - Thank you for the direction to the back of the radio - it's definitely the source for the constant and accessory power, I shall try and find a source for the main beam - is the clock wiring easy to get at? I need to remove the front console stuff don't I?
this is what I'm trying to do:

They don't call it that because that's not what they want you to connect to haha. They mean inside illumination. You want it to come on side sidelights and main lights, and also dim on your dimmer.
Carolyn's right, radio has switched and permanent live. Easy peasy!
My Radio dims when I turn the lights on.
I'm presuming that's what the controller does with the illumination power supply.
If so I'm guessing that's also in the radio loom somewhere but not sure what wire that would be.
:-/.... well at least I know what it is now! :-) :-) :-)

I don't recall mine diming... but could be wrong. I've got a Wx900BT... but in theory that means that the oem wiring should have that capability!

I've got a sony wx-gt90bt which I think is just an earlier version of yours. I never noticed it dimming till the other day when I was messing about to get my aerial working and just noticed it when I turned my lights on. So yes, it must be in the OEM wiring!
Right! I've figured this out!
The clock has 4 wires coming out of it.
Grey - approx 12V with ignition turned on
Red - always on at approx 12V
Green - approx 12V with light control on sidelights or main beam
White/Black - ground
Now - I've just had a thought.. wouldnt a better use of the clock space be the EDFC unit?? :-) :-) :-) Probably not a good idea to start make holes in the dash though...

Can anyone tell me how big the clock is on an MR2? Mines at home so can't measure it...
+1 on using the clock wiring. Those four wires will give you everything you need without running back to the fuse box.
Would be tidier in the centre dash bin (https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20170425/fb082e2d22ce39c8fa5ae3883a785f8d.jpg)

Thanks Bernie!
I take it that's it not a major effort to run cabling from behind the clock to inside the dash bin? i.e. no special drilling or customization?
The sum total of all this wiring is more than likely going to mean that it's a Ding Day effort as the total list of wiring now stands at:
- EDFC controller and motor wiring
- Under dash sub and Amp wiring
- EMB & box o tricks wiring...
two of the above require lifting the center console anyway, so I reckon Ding days is going to be all about wiring...
I was fortunate the the install was carried out by FGRob previous owner :-) :-) :-)

FGRob sounds like the kind of guy to buy a car from! What's he driving these days???
