Used the key fob to open the car this morning but it seemed dead and couldn't open the car. I tried my spare key, that was dead! I opened the drivers door manually with key, then set the alarm off, indicators flashing - couldn't stop the alarm from sounding. Was able to start the car but alarm still sounded. Oh dear what's the matter with Foxy. Is it just the case of the battery gone dead in the key fob (seems strange both didn't work) but to be fair I was pushing both buttons at one point just to try to silence it. The neighbours wouldn't have been happy with me at 07:00am this morning!! Any advice would be much appreciated.

New battery in the fob is certainly the first thing to try.
Thanks Simon, thought I'd try that tonight. Is there 2 batteries or just the 1 in the fob? Typical, gorgeous topless weather in Salisbury today & i havnt got Foxy s:( :( s:(
One battery in the fob, a CR1616, about 5 for £2 from well known auction sites.
However, there is a little red light that illuminates on my fob when I press either button, does your fob not have the same?

Just got in from work to check the key fob and can confirm there is a little red light that does appear so I haven't replaced battery yet as both my keys do illuminate when pushed. Just doesn't open or lock car. I see that the immobiliser light is lit on facia board too. I've disconnected the battery now just to stop it! I don't know what to do!!!!! s:crazyeyes:  s:crazyeyes: Shall I replace batteries even if red light illuminates but surely if it was dead it the key fob wouldn't illuminate! Oh dear s:( :( s:(

It doesn't sound like it will fix your problem. The chance of both remote(s), or their batteries, failing to disarm the alarm or unlock the doors is remote.
Hopefully someone else will come along shortly with some knowledge of what the cause might be [emoji53].
No, so I haven't bothered to swap batteries. Just wondering if I could disconnect the alarm wherever it is? Then I was wondering if a fuse had blown, this has never happened to me in 10 years of 2 ownership! Perhaps I've been lucky.
Sounds more like one of the neighbours got a wireless doorbell or alarm system - classic RF interference.
Open the car and drive it up the road (alarm will go off for a while but the immobiliser will be fine). Try locking and unlocking the car again - I bet it'll be fine (take both keys with you just in case!)
PS. This used to be a regular occurrence amongst ROC'ers - strange we haven't had any incidents recently.

Alarm sounder is inside the spare-wheel well (unless it's been moved by previous owner). It has a built-in battery so may keep squawking for a while!
If it starts, does that mean the remote is disabling the immobiliser, but not the alarm or unlocking the doors?
Ok Steve, I shall go out right now, heading your way, only joking. I'll let you know when I'm back, thanks very much. Off I go. s:D :D s:D

I'M BACK WITH FOXY. YOU ARE AMAZING STEVE, ALL IS BACK TO NORMAL. ARE YOU A MAGICIAN OR SOMETHING? That's incredible, I'd never heard of that. Many many thanks Steve and for your help earlier Smarty. s:D :D s:D s:D :D s:D s:D :D s:D s:D :D s:D
Credit all goes to Steve there, I had nothing constructive to add.
Really glad it's sorted though [emoji4].
Yes you did, I never realised there was a little red light on the key fob until you told me, 10 years that's taken me!!!! s:lol:  s:lol:
Sorry this had to happen to you Chilli but glad it's turned out ok and I can add it to my knowledge of stupid ways a roadster can try your patience!
Btw, the red lights start to go dim when the battery is getting weak, I got my replacements from Boyessssssssssssss.

The immobiliser and alarm are completely separate entities. Alarm is deactivated by the central locking RF transmitter in the key. The immobiliser is an RFID chip embedded in the keyfob casing.

Ah, that makes sense...
Still can't believe that was the cause, good to know for the future though.

The joys of having been around since the Roadster first launched on our shores (I owned what I believe was the 3rd SMT registered in the UK)!
Glad you're sorted - if it happens again go round the neighbours (and they can be upto 100m away) to ask if they've fitted anything new that's wireless. Some badly behaved WiFi access points can cause a problem too but that's got much less range.

You're always welcome to head over this way - I'll take you out for a spin in Izzy.
Shame we didn't meet up on Sunday but I'd love a spin in it, too much perhaps!! s:lol:  s:lol:
Glad to hear you have got to the bottom of it, just hope it isnt going to happen all the time if its a neighbour causing interference!!
That was a very impressive diagnosis. Well done. Must admit I wasn't aware of this potential problem.
Well, I'm at work today in Foxy, arrived and used the key fob to lock and it worked perfectly so shall enjoy going topless later in this glorious Salisbury sun. Wonder if i will be able to lock it on the drive tonight!

Just for info, the main alarm control box is under the centre console. At the very back between the seats, sort of under where the little cubby hole/ cup holder is. To get to it undo the same screws that you would to get into the handbrake adjuster. Disconnecting that box will kill the alarm and is not linked to the immobiliser so the car will still run.
Hopefully you won't need it once you have unplugged your neighbours new wifi!!!

Had exactly the same outside a mates house once. Only ever happened at his. I don't know what RFI was causing the issue, but it was localised.

Theres a row of parking spaces in my work's carpark that has this issue
Off topic a bit, but if there is RFI floating about like this, you can call Ofcom and they'll come and do something about it!

Result! My neighbour had been charging a Bluetooth gadget for her elderly father. When she removed it from charge/disconnected it, Foxy opened and locked perfectly. I don't think she believed me at first! Phew, I'm able to lock the car tonight! Thanks again to everybody, this forum is the best. s:D :D s:D
