Title: Interior mirror vibration
Post by: Justin.D on May 22, 2017, 07:41
Hope this is in the correct section

On my prefacelift the interior mirror vibrates so much that the image is blurry. It's kind of like when the stereo is cranked up with too much bass - I can assure you that's not the case here, it's all the time

The roads around here are not the finest but there are no issues with my daily drive. The mirror doesn't quite feel properly connected at the base, there is slight movement.

Is this a common feature, or am I in an exclusive mirror vibration club? Anyone know a fix?

Thanks in advance

It usually is caused by another issue. As the mounting to the screen is pretty robust. Although have a wiggle of the stem to see if it is loose.

Personally I'd check to see if any of your wheels are imbalanced.

I'm with you Justin. It's usually not a problem but there are times when I hold onto the mirror to be able to get a good focused look at what's behind me.

But then I'm on coilovers...

Possible silly question, but has it had a new screen?

I guess it's more of an isolated issue rather than the norm. To the best of my knowledge it's on standard suspension (only had the car 3 weeks)

I'm pretty sure the wheels are balanced ok, as mentioned in the op, it has some movement at the base of the mirror. I'm also pretty sure it's had a new screen at some point, it may need another one soon too (depending on another potential issue)

I'll keep an eye, maybe some foam between the stud attached to the windscreen and the mirror base itself will sort it

The FL and PFL windscreens are apparently different and the difference is to do with the rear view mirror mount. Wrong screen fitted?

Are the mirrors interchangeable with the other mounts though?

A test for ding dayers?

Reading the above I wouldn't be at all surprised to find out I've got the wrong screen in mine. I know it's not original and there's quite a gap between the screen and the A frame..

I had a look at others at Newby but results were inconclusive [emoji23] I'm going by the RAC Windows sticker in the bottom of the screen, pretty sure it's not factory fit!

Well, I've had a little fiddle - perhaps I should have done this first before going public with my issues!!!

It's definitely a replacement screen, the mirror wasn't quite locked into the stud on the screen. Slight adjustment, it's now seated better and not vibrating. Funnily enough one of my rattles has now disappeared too!!!

Thanks for the replies all

Hmm... I'll have a try as well. It was replaced 3 years ago but hey ho :

I still think it would be good to have a look at ding day. Where else are you going to get a better able size in a single day?

We could cover:
PFL versus FL
OE versus non OE

Perhaps I have my work hat on though. [emoji38]

I'll compare mine to Helen's, see if I can spot anything

Mine's PFL - fairly sure original screen and at "speed" the vibrations do mean that I needed bother looking at the mirror...
