Title: My smoking mr2
Post by: ilovejapcrap on May 24, 2017, 22:46
Hello all,

So got an mr2 around 2 weeks ago. It's a y reg with 77 000 ( if we believe it).

Anyway it smokes a bit and I'm assuming it needs a engine rebuild.

But with the help of people on here I'm trying all the other things first !

So the symptoms are white smoke puffing away when ticking over, and when thrashed some black smoke.

So far I have

Cleaned the cold start valve or whatever it's called under throttle body.

New plugs and oil

New injectors.

Maff cleaned with carb cleaner

Nothing has solved it.

I had a mechanic around today and he's not convinced it's oil use.

He thinks it's a fuel issue. Anyway he's thinking that my cat on exhaust has failed and it's messing up my readings making it run rich,

He also is unsure if head gaskets going ( that can give white smoke ) as it seemed very pressurised when lid taken off expansion tank.

He's going to come back with a sniffer to see if head gasket has gone.

I'll keep you up dated in case any other new owners have a similar issue !

Head gasket is unlikely to fail unless it's been seriously overheated - they're mls.
What's that saying about walking and quacking like a duck?
It's a smoking 1zz!

Have you changed the air filter?
