Title: Steering UJ Symptoms
Post by: ColinC on June 3, 2017, 17:36
My steering feels a bit vague at higher speeds around 60 plus, this combined with Toyo Proxies that seemed to need bedding in, has perplexed me for a while. I dont know if its coincidence or what to have the 2 issues together, but I have found the tyres seeming to get more sure footed so I put this down to the release agent on them, as others were reporting a similar story. Now I think the tyres are not the sole issue, I dont have heavy steering or grinding etc so initially did not think to check the UJ. I checked it today and there is a very small movement when the steering wheel is rocked so slightly, but not moving the wheels. I can feel a small knocking, when holding above and below the lower joint, which I take it should not be there. I am presuming there should be no movement at all. It is a bit rusty, but the mileage is 62K and a 05 plate so I thought it was too young for play. I am thinking I need to replace it so that's a job for next week, does that make sense?

Yes it does and that will definitely help sort it out, it's an easy job, 30 mins if you're sensible with a toolkit

Sounds very similar to mine, just before I replaced it.

Thanks for your feedback, I have ordered the part, which will take a couple of days to get here.

Where did you find the steering U/J replacement in the end?

Sorry for the delay in responding but there was no notification. I got a genuine Toyota part and fitted it and it did make a difference, so now on to the shock absorbers and springs, and hopefully that will also help.
