Trying to debug a rear rattle/clunk noise which comes from the rear drivers side corner when going over a bump. sounds like metal on metal.
It only does it on sharp bumps like pot holes and not over speed bumps.
I thought it was the tool kit for a while, but its not that.
I've given the drop-links a good pull and there doesn't seem to be any play there.
I jacked the rear corner up to see if i can hear where the sound is coming from by wobbling stuff - no luck.
How stiff are your rear wheels to turn, with the gear in neutral, and only one corner jacked up? I'm guessing from the LSD we're expecting it to be stiff, ish? Does it make much of a sound, mine makes a sound similar to something rubbing, and each time i change direction of rotation there's a click sound.
Could be your RH drive shaft carrier or universal joint
Hopefully not and just one of the many heat shields in the engine bay.
The rubbing/click could be just brake pads moving , it's fairly normal for there to be 'some' drag from them.
Mine did have a clonk then scrape on pot holes from the front , was the brake stone guard falling off from being rotten , might be worth checking.
Mine spin free (I keep the handbrake at near max travel so it backs off properly), don't think I've spun it enough to have the LSD affect it.
Cheers - an amount of brake drag would fit the noise I'm hearing when turning the wheel manually- like the pads are just touching.
I'll try rattling some of the shields again, i tried prodding most of them, hopefully i missed the wobbly one.
I didn't check the stone guard, I'll try that this morning.
If it was the drive shaft carrier or universal joint - how would I go about diagnosing that?
thanks again :-) :-) :-)
Any sideways play is not good. A little slop when changing direction of rotation is normal
Dug a bit deeper into the rattling, found a few bits it could be, but they're more centreline rather than from the corner. anyhow, any comparisons to how its meant to be or what its like on your 2 greatly appreciated :-) :-) :-)
1) Image rattle_1: I found some bolts missing from a bit of the exhaust strap. There appears to be a bolt in place, but its not connected to the upper surface. I can rattle it a small amount when cold, could be a different story when hot. anyone know whats meant to go in here, is it just a bolt through both halves?

2)Image rattle_2: looking down from the engine bay onto the exhaust, there appears to be another bolt missing, however i cant rattle it when cold- maybe it does when hot...

3)image rattle_3: There's a little metal tab that's not attached to anything - in the image my finger is touching it, hard to see. is this normal? I'm assuming there's meant to be something fixed to it.

Booo! Theres a very small amount of play in the RHS driveshaft on the wheel side - so either the joint or what the joint is connected too. Very minor, maybe less than 1mm, but i can hear it if I push/pull on it. I didnt take the boot off so not sure. On the LHS theres no play at all.
I assume there should be no movement at all on the wheel side of the driveshaft if I grab it and push pull on it pretty hard?
What direction are you moving it in? In line with the shaft? No big deal. 90 degrees to the shaft? A bit of an issue, but could last quite a while.

90 degrees to the shaft
It could be your noise , but then that exhaust shield is a classic issue.
the band is a welded in bolt type of thing.
drill out and put new nut/bolt in , or just get big jubilee clips.
I am also chasing down a rattle/grind on my car, still working on finding where it is but I did notice that the airbox has a metal heat shield on it and its right next to an exhaust heat shield so if the airbox moves during driving - say over a bump, it could also make a noise.
When I had a heat shield rattle it was driving me potty, sounded as thought it was coming from inside the door, then tried to rattle the vent, then the aerial, found it was a bolt missing on the heat shield.

There's a good chance the grease inside the joints has turned to an emulsified grey liquid. If you're up for the job, you could remove the bands on the gaiters, clean out the old lubricant and re-pack with graphite grease and then put new bands on. Bands and pliers for the job are readily available.
That should improve things somewhat.
The rattles you're hearing are most probably from the heat-shields.
Thanks everyone for helping to diagnose so far. I'll try and fix the loose heatshields first. My local garage has said they will give the driveshaft a quick wobble about for free on the ramp to see what they think of it.

+1. I had a bolt missing from the heat shield. Was driving me potty.
One of the built-in nuts had simply rusted off.
I drilled them all out and replaced as well as put metal tie-wraps everywhere.
I had this, and it turned out to be the hard top locating point was loose. The silver one with the torx bolts. Took ages to find, I didn't think of it at first.
Need to look at the heat shields again, as I notice the noise from the outside, when I first start the car.
So I had the garage check the drive shaft and the suspension. They said its all fine. Rattle most likely from the heatshields, I've had new bolts put in the loose bits and added large jublee clips. Everything seems pretty firm now, cant rattle anything by hand.
But something is still rattling about like crazy - only happens when the car is rattled like going over a bumpy bit of road, doesnt do it on smooth road through the entire rev range. Doesnt appear to be speed related.
Rattles much worse when its hot outside. This is driving me crazy s:crazyeyes:  s:crazyeyes:
Here's a video of the rattle, had the mrs drive over a drain cover - the clunk noise isnt the drain cover.
Ignore the poor sounding exhaust, that was me playing with the heat shield s:roll:  s:roll:
But the other is a definite clunk which I think comes from the rear drivers wheel.

I feel your pain. Rattle chasing is just horrible.
suggestion:
Get the rear up on jackstands. Remove the wheel, jack the hub up until it's in full weight bearing mode. This, at least, simulates running conditions. Check all bushings for slop with a pry-bar. Take a peek at your brake back-plate. Have a damn good poke around.
Check your wheel-arch liner and underneath plastics while you're there.
Good luck!
I chased one in the cab for three months....
woohoo, fixed!
turned out to be a missing anti rattle spring from the rear rhs brake pad.
