Seen this on other cars, but it is completely missing on mine!

haven't got mine either , someone from the forums took it s:) :) s:) .
Without it more dirt in , but also makes it easier to clean the dirt back out (around the subframe specifically)
it's not unusual to not have it.
That particular one looks very familiar s:) :) s:) . Mines has been off for a few weeks now after it started melting. It melted after some cladding on the upper side came free and we suspect came into contact with hot exhaust ( not long after I'd asked a garage to take it off to inspect subframe, coincidence maybe? s:wink:  s:wink: . It's referred to on here as the nappy. Don't know reasons for its existence, other than maybe protection from hot exhaust components, and some protection for subframe? (maybe to stop small cats sheltering under car from getting scalded to death). Having it off gives better access to anyone inspecting the car (i.e. for MOT) as this bit of plastic can hide some potentially dangerous corrosion to subframe. But is it any worse being off? Don't really know, but mines is staying off, at least until I hear more answers to your question s:) :) s:)

These things are a pain. Held on by tiny bolts and large washers, the bolts rust and shear off, leaving the options of drilling out the old bolt and re-tapping, or securing the nappy with tie wraps, which break on a regular basis. My car still has one, held by tie wraps.
Are they needed? Well apart from preventing damage, I think they reduce noise and improve handling in exceptionally windy conditions. This is only my opinion. But having tested my car extensively over the Severn Bridge and on motorways in general, with and without nappy, I do think they are needed. Without the nappy, I've noticed a slight booming noise and more sensitivity to cross wind. I think the nappy makes the car a bit more aerodynamic.
It would be interesting to know if anyone else has noticed this.

Yep - busted - I was going to save and then re-post the pic, but figured I'd just use your original s:) :) s:)
Interested to know what people's opinions are - I've only ever driven a '2 without one... I couldn't figure why people were b!!!!!ng so much about it being difficult to see the subframe - I just had an old jumper one, a torch and a bit of a wriggle to inspect the only two I'd seen (TBH, I walked away from the first one I saw without driving it - no holes but lots of aged rust and more due to the state of oil as it was a an unloved PFL).
Makes sense on the dirt in/out... and the aero.... I was more worried about the aero TBH, it's not exactly a car that would benefit from sudden lift at the rear.... **cue another "ooh matron"??**
I did post earlier on this subject, Mr T went to a lot of trouble designing these motors so that they would be well balanced - There are 2 Air deflectors on the underside just in front of the front wheels - These adjust airflow under the vehicle - The nappy acts as a counter balance to prevent back end spin out!! The fixings are a pain - So I use Cable Ties!!
MIne doesn't have its nappy. I did wonder if that was a problem at first but have decided it actually makes maintenance easier and allows a check of the subframe with ease. As it is only held on with plastic clips I guess it could be more trouble than it is worth when the come loose.
Appreciate the fact that Toyota designed the airflow around the car using it, but I don't push mine hard enough that its only the airflow dynamics left keeping me in a straight line. (perhaps I should drive nearer the edge, but mine is one of the older Mk3 ladies)
It is all down to personal choice, but getting hold of a replacement is quite a task - I tried for a while before I decided to go without
Out of interest, where did you try before you decided to go without?
I would have thought Dean, Dick and others would have tons of these hanging about?

Yeah, mines was same, held on by one screw and the rest tie wrapped. Same with central shielding

I hadn't realised it functioned as an aero aid, cheers for info

Lol! I'm slow today, wasn't until i saw the carry on meme from Essex2Visuvesi...
I had used the quote option to quote you. But doing it on a tappy keyboard I lost the front quote marks and just could'nt be arsed to do it again.
Now corrected
I keep looking at these

It was in my early days before I knew of Dean & Dick, so I tried local scrappers and dealers. You are probably right that our expert breakers would be able to help, by the time I found they existed I had lost the enthusiasm for replacing!
