Hi all,
As our cars aren't the newest around and seemingly its slightly more unloved than the Mk2 meaning less aftermarket uprated parts I was just wondering what service/wear and tear items I should look to get now whilst they are in stock to keep the car on the road moving forward?
I am thinking things like track rods and other more generic parts should be ok as later models might use the same part, was more thinking about MR2 specific parts such as the wheel hubs/bearings or maybe brakes/brake pads?
Excellent question, I was thinking just the same thing the other day as I was doing my usual scan of eBay. Some parts like body panels are very cheap, now, but in the future when they are not will we all regret not buying a set and hanging them somewhere for when we need them?
Will be interested to follow this one.

I think things like body panels would be useful, however you can repair them or make copies of them in fibreglass etc whereas you can't make an ABS sensor or wheel hub out of fibreglass!
Tbh if money and space are no object I would by a car to cannabalize for spares.
Have to agree with Scotte. Right now I have stashed: Good pair of driveshafts, new pair of front A arms from the USA (Scion ones that also fit our cars) a spare rebuilt engine, will be adding ABS pump, power steering pump and probably a steering joint.
Wish I had the space or I'd have another backup car for sure. Especially with 2 mr2s in the household

Thanks for these replies, I don't have space for a spare car but do have garage/loft space now, looks like I will start to stockpile:
Hubs
Pair of driveshafts
A arms
ABS pump
Power steering pump
Steering joint
Rear subframe
I will have the stock engine that will be coming out of my car once I drop in an uprated unit - will look to keep that as a spare anyway including the gearbox etc.
No matter what you hoard you won't have the part you need lol
How much should I look to pay for a replacement rear subframe? I know they are around £350 from Toyota.

That's your answer. Nowhere else to get them from and I believe they are no longer made so it's just what they have in stock.
I've done well with subframes from Rutland MR2

Just steel parts from the wife's car, that's what I do!!!
I'd say 150 for a good used subframe
Fortunately I have two 2's - Come the day I have start to start to raid one for the other will be a sorry day, indeed!!
I am guessing both pre and post facelift subframe are the same?

I think FL have some extra bracing but they all fit.
The subframes are not the same, but I'm pretty sure the later one can be substituted for the earlier one.
I may be speaking out of turn but our new affiliate, Megillian, told me that his next project is a tubular rear subframe.
So,there is hope.
Mind,he's ridiculously busy. It's not often I speak to a man who sounds like he's about to collapse.

Hmm I have bought a reconditioned rear subframe which has been powdercoated and restored, plan to keep that wrapped up in the garage for when I do need it or could put it in when the engine gets swapped out - hopefully it will fit, will compare mine with the one that arrives to see if it matches up!

Not no more.
They're going up every day.
I've seen someone ask (and get) £240 for a powder coated refurb.

Indeed, I have managed to get a refurbed power coated one, not quite as much as £240 though but considering an OEM one (which will rust still) is £350 its still the cheaper option as you would need to powder coat any new OEM subframe anyway. My current subframe looks to be fine but I know they rust inside out although my whole car is fairly rust free even after 14 years, plan will be to swap in the replacement subframe probably at the same time as I swap the engine, I can then refurb the current one and either keep as a spare or sell on to recoup some cost.
Dean At Rutlands has a good one for 150.00 plus postage including the Arms and bolts
Needs a bit of paint
