Has anyone tried to take an engine (without gear box) out of the top of the car? Looks almost possible, with the crank pulley off?? As far as I can fathom the challenge is to clear the clutch from the input shaft.
Why struggle?
With the kit we have, it would be a lot less work. I've always dropped them, and I can do it again. Just asking if it has been done.
From memory you'd need to remove the intake manifold & alternator (not the easiest tasks in-situ) first or cut away the cross member and remove the rear subframe.
Lift the car off the engine - its much easier s;) ;) s;)
Well, that fell on stony ground..... I've removed several engines by dropping them out. I'm not really that thick! I was just asking if it had/can be done.
I think the answer is yes, but with much difficulty with the alternator.

I guess your best option if you want to take it out the "top" is to flip the car over... ;-p
But in all honesty I'm glad someone's asking this stuff!
Hi Carolyn
Had a look today at mine (missing the whole rear end at present)
Even with the pulleys removed like we talked about its going to be tight, and the bigger problem will be the inlet manifold. You'll need to cant the engine over as you remove it so the inlet will clear the back part of the engine bay opening
I think its possible as long as you have some burly chaps to help you manhandle the engine
Just lift the rear of the car up using an engine hoist etc, will be easier than trying to fit it through the top.

Have you read the whole thread? Just wondering....
Just so you all get my drift... Here's one of the swaps we've done, using the car lift, engine and subframe dropped out....
I'd say yes.
People were telling me you needed loads of stuff to take out bottom, yet I did it with just two ramps and a jack.
I don't know why people aren't taking manifold off whilst it's in car it's easy and makes loads more room
