Title: Aero mods
Post by: m1tch on August 11, 2017, 14:24
Hi all,

Just wondering what sort of Aero mods people have done to their car, I am thinking about mods that actually help the car rather than make the car look 'better'.

Due to the lower speed of the car and the inherent weight being rearwards I am mainly looking for aero mods on the front - not looking to fit a rear wing as unless they are chassis mounted and you are doing triple digit speeds all its adding is weight and drag.

Looking for advice on:

Front splitters - front down force
Cut/modded front wings - reduction of drag from front wheel wells
Modded bonnet - front down force with benefit of improved airflow through rad

Also interested to see if anyone is running a cut or modded rear bumper to help with drag reduction?

Why are you only interested in front downforce?

In vehicle dynamics, having weight at the rear means more force on the tyres, meaning more grip. The tyres however proportionally are responsible for more of the mass to move laterally in cornering.

Lots of stuff you do to set up the car with suspensions bla bla bla, but physics still applies.

If you increase downforce at the front you will change the balance of the car at high speed, meaning more oversteer at high speed than low speed.

The average front/rear bias of the downforce is referred to as the centre of pressure. Ideally around the same place as the centre of mass.

(Downforce is also a loose term, the MR2 probaly produces lift like 99% of road cars)

At a guess, your best bet would be lowering the car.

The Laile Beatrush Undertrays are supposed to be an improvement over stock

I imagine that the only people who may have some actual evidence of improvements with different mods would be some one who race them, possibly Rogue by using Lap times?

I have bonnet vents (with no plastic under bonnet trim) which I thought would increase air flow over the rad and reduce high speed lift, oh, and look very cool!

Cant say I have honestly noticed any effect (other than looking cool). Thats not to say it doesnt do what I expected, just that its probably a very marginal change.

The undertray sounds like a good place to start but without a wind tunnel etc it would surely be hard to balance the effects of front and rear mods?

I am toying with obtaining some and having some copies made as these can be tricky to obtain at a sensible price

Mainly looking at a few reasons for aero, mainly for drag reduction but also for high speed stability (when running down the drag strip) but also at lower speeds in the corners as my MR2 with weigh removed has a higher rear weight bias which is good for traction but not ideal when the front end goes light.

At low speeds aero isn't going to do much.

At the sort of speeds you will see in the 1/4 mile, you won't need aero unless you are running huge power. The car should be fine. If it's not, get geometry checked. The race cars have inverter tunnels and big holes in the bonnets to vent them, with wings to balance. Last thing you want is a very nose heavy grip bias in the highest speed corners. None of it makes much difference below 3 figure speeds. Biggest benefit could probably be had by fitting a complete end to end under tray with tunnels and diffusers.

Also, if you've taken weight out of the front, move the battery up there to redress the balance without adding to the overall weight.

Thanks guys, will look at a few bits such as battery to frunk etc but might just leave the car as is in terms of aero, I have removed my TTE rear spoiler as for me it was just adding weight, tempted to do a tuft test to see what its like with the hardtop for air flow.

Just spend a lot of money on tyres for better times at the strip.
