Title: Valve buckets
Post by: Carolyn on August 20, 2017, 13:17
Hi All,

It's time to re-shim my valves.  I've been looking for shims/buckets with no real success.  The idea of buying them from Mr T frightens me.

Anybody know how much I should expect to pay and where I can get for a reasonable price?

cheers

Tried the obvious TCB? He seems to be doing some good deals at the minute

I'll give him a shout.  Looks like I'm going to need quite a few....

I'm sure you've thought of it already, but your spare engine will probably have what you need

Yes... but then I'll need buckets for that one.  Mine are all pretty much at the limit, so I reckon I'll need some fatter than I've got....
At some point new ones have to enter the system!!

Are there any possible replacements to the OEM integrated bucket and shim - eg having the bucket and shim separate like most other engines?

I looked at that.  bloody expensive and you have to get 16 buckets and then the pop-on shims. AND they are in foreign lands....

Wonder if you are able to simply add some additional shim material to the current buckets - eg measure the current shim which would probably be worn out of spec slightly anyway and then add on some material to get the correct thickness and then attach it to the original bucket and shim setup?

It would have to be a tiny bucket that goes over the button under the shim.  I know we're pretty good with the lathe, but a .05 mm shim??

Might be able to use a feeler gauge as the shim?

How do you propose to attach it?  Have you seen what the underside of one of these buckets looks like?

Have you got a valve seat grinding tool? Should be fairly easy to take off a couple of thou (.05mm) effectively moving the valve up.

This is for an engine in the car!!  Anyway, I'd rather not grind these seats, they are thin enough as it is.

Thanks Allan, just the kind of help I was looking for.

Carolyn. We've filed away a few spare buckets here over the years. Happy to send them your way if you're willing to ship them back when you're done..... just replenish the quantity with your rejected ones. I'm not overly fussed if they're too thin!

I'll list what I've got here when I get a mo.

And another 32 of unknown size yet to be liberated.

Perhaps we should set up a ROC bucket exchange facility.

That is utter genius.

I'll measure and label them before sending them back.  They'll be a lot more use that way....

Sounds like it might be worth setting up a 'shim exchange program' on the forum, I am sure I will be needing some different shims at some point when I rebuild an engine, I guess you could remove a bit of material from the top of the valve stem, I know other Toyota engines had a shim on bucket.

Just easier to put the right shim in.  Take it off the top of the valve and the gap gets bigger.  I doubt you'll find any that have gone tight. The seats are especially thin and are not meant to be ground.  Usually you can manage by moving shims around and only replacing a few....

Not the most exciting bucket list, you want to add in a spot of skydiving or a lamborghini trackday   s:P :P s:P

I'm sure I read on here sometime that they often do actually go tight because the seat wears/sinks a little. Could be wrong, that's from memory.

Yes I can certainly see that happening, if you think about it every time the valve snaps shut it's lightly hammering the seat a bit. Multiply that by what must be millions of times and I can well see that the seat gets compressed and the valve stem may well stretch a tad.

Bonsai recently did the valve clearances on my 2ZZ engine.

FWIW, the OEM shims weren't horrendously expensive. Also, we found that some shims could be re-used and moved to another valve, as they were the size we needed anyway!
