Title: Air Con Question?
Post by: Mikeymead on August 28, 2017, 16:51
Took the "lady" wife and doggy out for a drive today and to keep my furry friend (dog just to be clear) cool had the air con on for about an hour. on the way home I stopped of at Aldi to pick up a few things an on returning back to the car I found a puddle of clear water that seemed to be coming from the front of the passenger footwell area. The car is running well and the temperature reads normal, also the air con works well. By the time I had driven home which is just round the corner the leak had stopped. Had a quick look on the interweb and it seems that this can be quite normal and it is just a bi-product of the condenser which I suppose is feasible or should I be worrying?

In a word - NO!! But check your Drains  - If the floor mats become soggy - Then L/H drain it is!! - Look in stowage bay behind passenger -If water in there then good indication the drain is blocked!!

That's perfectly normal. Air conditioning works like a dehumidifier, removing moisture from the air - That moisture needs to go somewhere and gets dumped outside the car. You would only notice a pool if stationary (ie parked outside Aldi (Other supermarkets are available))

Have a look under any recently parked car when the weather is hot, there will be a pool forming for the few minutes after initially parking. My Fiesta does it, my MR2 does it, the Mrs Peugeot does it, the list goes on (even German cars do it!!!)

Thanks for the reply, sorry to seem thick but I take it that I don't have to be worried then, as for the drains I think that they're alright as I've had both storage bins out recently and it all seems as dry as the Sahara in there.

I had the same not long ago. Perfectly normal for A/C. Even verified by an elderly gentleman who passed by and spotted me examining the puddle.  s:) :) s:)

Well if an elderly gentleman verified it then that's good enough for me, just never seen it before. Thank you all for putting my mind at ease.

Kate's drops loads of water from the air con condenser. Nothing to worry about. The hotter it is the more it drops!

Mine doesn't do this but that's because my A/C doesn't work.    s:( :( s:(

I need a new condenser but am struggling to source one off ebay for sensible money.  Maybe next summer!

Basically, your A/C condenser gets chilly cold when operating. The moisture in the air condenses onto the, er, condenser. Enough will condense on there that the water will collect enough to start dripping onto the floor. Stand still long enough after using the a/c & you get a puddle.
