Hi, see pics below, are these the "ears" people describe when their hood doesn't have a strap?
Also, if the strap is missing can another be fitted, or was it an integral part of the hood (was it sewn in, or can you reattach another?
My hood doesn't open/close particularly well sometimes, and I think I'm maybe missing the strap, please confirm s:) :) s:) (https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20170906/063c84c19ce816e01b046393fa45c22f.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20170906/6b088d8161e96566c4293001e99f08e0.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20170906/59c343e536c29ba748a4572ec89e549f.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20170906/85305251e829fbb6d14d37a8f13c0ef9.jpg)

The strap is literally a strap with press-studs either end. So yes you can definitely get hold of one. You shove it through a gap tunnel of fabric to hold it in place and hide it. But you can also just tuck the ears in whilst putting the roof down carefully. Depends how much you care about it doing it automatically.

Cheers tiff s:) :) s:) it's minor, nothing terrible, but can't help wondering if hood would go up and down a little easier if I had the strap
Mine was disconnected on my '06.....reconnected it, but it hasn't made much difference, - the corners still need tucked-down.

Did you notice any improvement in ease of opening/closing after reattaching?
Are you gently pushing the window into place/guiding it up again when you do the roof?
I'm more inclined to think it's the window rather than the ears strap or lack of...

Not that I noticed....I press down & back on the glass as I lower it, & after having had an MX*5, you learn to let it drop slowly in cooler temps rather than forcing it down.
The '2's does not fold as easily as the 5's did.

Hood goes up and down easily on a hot day when the vinyl has expanded. But on colder days, I can't fold down the hood from inside the car, I have to get out and, like you say, push down the glass. And when I lift the hood back up from inside the car on colder days there's horrible cracking/clacking noises and a flexing of the frame (I'm pulling from both sides of the front edge -granted, i'm a bit rough sometimes admittedly and I'm probably being unreasonably precious about it all, maybe totally normal and "just how it is", but thought I'd ask in case it was the strap s:) :) s:) )
As the temperatures get colder the closer to Winter then the harder it becomes to operate the hood up and down - The strap, is as described above but more clarity on the tunnel is needed - There is a tunnel within the tunnel - Get a hefty book to support the hood when halfway down and then check the "Main" Tunnel - This should have a spring wire running through it ( Do not put the strap through there !! ) The Tunnel for strap runs parallel to the main tunnel situated to the rear of the " Main" In other words 2 fingers in - You forefinger will find the" Main " with spring - Your middle finger will locate the strap tunnel - Using a length of curtain wire, or narrow broom shank, tape the strap to it and insert into strap tunnel and feed it from one side to the other - once the strap is in position, bend the strap over the side frame, back on to itself and use the press stud to secure the strap - The press studs are liable to damage overtime and tend to pop out -I overcame this by stitching the strap with the studs engaged!! - Do the same operation at both ends!! - There is an explanatory "how to" - Try the Search box to find pictures - Hope this helps!! When folding the hood ensure the rear window is flat before fully folding!!

Well the handbook tells you to do everything from stood outside the car... [emoji23]
I can't do either from sat inside as I've got restricted movement in my neck but even without that problem I wouldn't try it, even on a hot day when it's supple.
It might go down ok but my window surround catches on the locking button spring.
It could be the same with yours, that's maybe what you can hear?

Thanks for the detailed description Rob, that's good info

Oh and as an addendum to Rob's excellent instructions re the rodding (not the finger...), make sure you've got clearance the other side. Not like someone I know who did it in their garage...

Apparently not... good luck getting your fingers sewn back on!
Oh and it's also recommended in cold weather to get the top warm before dropping, run the heaters etc, to avoid cracking.

...I do, I just unfortunately lack the general car knowledge to know what it's on about s:lol:  s:lol: It just ends in more confusion followed by looking stuff up on this forum s:wink:  s:wink:
I dont think the strap will make the hood easier to put up or down, more likely the opposite as at the end you are also compressing the ears so harder to close the last bit. There is a chance that you have a strap in your hood though but it has just come undone and left so if you are lucky you could find one in there that would just need re-attaching.
My roof has always been difficult and it also catches the window with that horrible noise. I have cut down the 2 plastic hooks for the parcel shelf which helped but I often have to open the hood release catch too so it clears that then putting the hood up.

Yeah, Thats what midlife was saying. If that's what it is then I'm just glad to not be twisting/deforming the frame which is what I thought was happening s:) :) s:)

It was the fingers that did me, all I could think of was Micky Flanagan.

Cheers both for link, good vid, makes it clear
Hey, Gents - The Hood is CANVAS sprayed with Vinyl - The threads go from front to back and from left to right ( Weft and Warp!! ) In cooler temps canvas contracts - in warmer temps it expands !! - Avoid putting the hood down if moisture is seen on it - The canvas will warm from the heat coming from the engine bay and will be disproportionate to the vinyl so that, overtime the Vinyl will crack!! I'm an ex Sailmaker - ( Only saying!!) s:roll:  s:roll: s:roll:  s:roll: s:D :D s:D

Oops, I did exactly that this morning - was raining last night but beautiful morning s:oops:  s:oops:
I'll need to treat it with a bit more care. I have treated it twice in last 4 months with turtle wax hood cleaner and conditioner.
