Title: TTE Exhaust Rattle
Post by: MisterK on September 12, 2017, 12:49
I've had a rattle from the backend (painful I know!) for sometime now & always assumed it was one of my heatshields.  I had visited Steve at D1 Customs a few months back and all of the heatshield nuts & bolts were replaced with nice new stainless ones & we thought that should cure the problem.  Unfortunately, it didn't so now we thought it was the Cat causing the problem, so the car was booked in again with Steve to get to the bottom of the problem once & for all.

When we got the car on the ramp and started up it appeared that the rattle - at about 2000rpm and a lot louder when the engine was started from cold - was coming from either the Cat or the exhaust silencer.  To prove conclusively one way or the other, Steve decided to take off the rear bumper to get better access.  Using a stethoscope it did appear to be the silencer was the culprit, but just to be sure Steve disconnected the Cat from the exhaust.  Lo & behold, it was the silencer that rattled when bumped, not the cat or heatshields.

So, this is something that I'll have to live with, or replace the exhaust - I don't know if this is something that can be repared.  To do this, the silencer would need to be opened up and the baffles re-welded or replaced.  As it's stainless steel is this even possible, & if so, would it be expensive?

Steve was wondering if this could be the start of a TTE rattle epidemic?  My TTE was fitted by the Toyota Dealer in July 2005 and it has covered 55,000 miles, but most journeys have been over 10 miles and the engine got hot - no 1 mile journeys to the shops!  Are there many other TTE exhausts out there that have been on a car for 12+ years, having covered 55K+ miles - not many I would guess.

Anyway I'll live with the rattle for now as it's only really bad when cold and can't be heard under normal driving.

Thanks to Steve for all his help yesterday - another tick in the box to go with Stu C's visit last week   s:D :D s:D

Its the heatshield on the downpipe to cat pipe at the front - the heat shield is usually spot welded on, these usually fail and then the front edge of the heatshield then rattles - I have a TTE exhaust as well and mine has covered 175k miles.

Mine is exactly the same and rattles at 2k rpm - I think if you type in 'mr2 2k exhaust rattle' its quite common.

Yes I did.

It wasn't rattling though. Rather it was too flippin' loud. Sounded like I was being chased down the street by a Messcherschmidt.

The exhaust people cut a square on the bottom of the exhaust &, I assume, threw some packing inside. Liveable again.

Mine had to have a new flange welded on at 127k miles.  Have been wondering if anything else is off with mine.

I still think mine is far louder than others I've heard but the only cars I can really compare with are Patrick's (not really a fair comparison) and my mum's (with stock silencer not TTE).

Why is mine not a fair comparison? At idle they're essentially the same (gutted manifold and TTE).
Mine did sound different, but yours has that typical nice TTE burble that mine has lost along the way a bit

Yours has a lot more goodies added to it and at least a third knocked off my mileage  s:) :) s:)  personally thought yours idled nicer but hey ho

I guess my main wonder is what a less-used TTE sounds like at 70mph on the motorway or when you put your foot down at low revs and the engine is slightly laboured. Almost thought mine might be blowing but I'd have hoped the exhaust doctor would have picked up on that if so.

Have to say when my right tailpipe came off, it wasn't noticeably louder so I wonder just how much it actually does vs the nearside one.
