Do the driveshafts just pull straight out of the gearbox?
want to do some cleaning and painting of the rear carriers etc and thought it might be easier with them off the car and I'd prefer to leave the hub side alone if possible
I know I'll loose gearbox oil, but I was planning on replacing it anyway
Yes. Passenger side needs a bit of convincing. Tap it using a plastic or wood dowel on the ledge Toyota kindly provided on the driveshaft. See the pic in the clutch change how to
Cheers shnazzle, thought it would just be a push fit but wanted to be sure
It is I guess, if you just put it in fresh with fresh lubrication s:) :) s:)
But on a shaft that's been in for a good while.. No chance. Besides, you can't really pull at it because you're pulling on the boot/joint.
Pretty sure the drivers side shaft has 2 14mm bolts holding the bearing to the support, Undo them then use a small hammer and chisel to knock it through.
I assumed he meant after removal of all the necessary bolts. Can't remove it without removing the hubs or the arms from the crossmember either.

Arms have only just gone on and haven't been torqued yet so will be easy to remove
The newly painted subframe makes the the rest of the engine bay look bad so I'm gonna give the bay and extra bits some paint as well
