How many people have either had Toyota replace their knackered engines and/or cats, or have expressed their concerns to Toyota?
The reason I ask is that I recently wrote to Toyota with my concerns for the longevity of my engine and they wrote back stating thet they know of no issues regarding the cats or engine failures. They advised me to take out an extended warranty and keep a check on the oil level, as most engine problems are the result of a lack of owner maintenance!
Toyota is not aware of the precat failure problem? Yeah right!! they play the unfair card so that you pay a garantee extension, or they simply don't wanna admit it publicly and officially......
This problem is known for everyone which has an MR2. The best thing to do is to gut them and that's it. You are safe and no matter Toyota says, take them out otherwise you'll have to pay a complete new engine..... s:? :? s:?
Yeah, even my local dealer hasn't ever heard of any problems, though they've handled (at least) three blown engines so far s:roll:  s:roll:
This is amazing!
I am on the french, german, US forums and we all know about this problems except the toyota dealers in those countries!!!
Looks like they've had an official letter from Toyota HQ telling them to fake!! s:x :x s:x
I don't know for you guys, but it's hard to find a Toyota dealer in Germany that knows very well the MR2........it's really embarassing (for them...). I've had 3, and they were all really average....

I think this is how all the manufacturers behave these days.
They will never admit to problems, I guess if they did it would mean people would claim for failure outside the 3 year warranty under sale of goods legislation.
I think a lot of Avensis engines are failing as well, so this may not be an MR2 only problem, also it still isn't clear (to me anyway), whether the precat failures are cause or effect, there seems to be a good chance that the bores are wearing ovally, which causes oil blow by, which may be destroying the cats.
Its a real shame, as if Toyota could re-assure us that they have understood and fixed the problem as of a certain month, or engine number, then owners would be a lot happier !

I've heard the same and it goes for Corolla too. Except they seem to be only suffering from excessive oil consumption and in the end loss of power. It may very well be that's how it starts with the 2 as well, which breaks the precats, which makes everyone notice the problem s:? :? s:? I guess we'll never know for sure...
Hi All,
I think you will find - they do know about the problems, but like any company wanting to keep the fall out costs to a mimimum, will work on the basis that, repairing the cars which fail under warranty or extended warranty is far cheeper than dealing with a recall or modification.
The engine problem first arose in the Avensis and mentioned earlier, which is a far more global car in terms of numbers sold, as opposed to the MR2.
As cars, engines, designs evolve, it's much simpiler to solve them as and when they go wrong on cars already shipped. Obviously modifactions will be made to tooling, etc at the factory for unbuild vehicles.
It's a numbers game and of course they don't want it to get expensive, so a wall of silence is the best option for the company, but it is a bit cheeky when we all know there is a fundemental problem in earlier cars !
