Title: N/S brake cable replacement
Post by: kwnelson on September 16, 2017, 20:57
Searched on Youtube for this and found one that showed the process. However this required dropping the fuel tank as there is a bolt fixing the cable behind the tank { I just filled the tank].   The guy the doing the video said some people just cut the cable off!NEVER!   So having cut off the cable and purchased a new cable.   I am now preparing to install same.   Has anybody done this, and can give any pointers, this would be most welcome.   I am starting tomorrow PM.

I don't see how you can just cut it off. You don't have to remove the fuel tank just lower it enough to get your arm behind it !

Good practice (and time saving) to do both cables together

Done the job no problem,  used electric cable for drawcord/mouse, threaded the brake cable through and made connection.   Appreciate the advise to do both cables, but decided to do O/S later, just want to get her through MOT.

Drop tank and do both cables. it'll be easier in the long run.

Did you have to move the tank at all using this method?

2 bolts and the tank will drop down. I would imagine you would spend more time messing about trying to do it any other way

It does, however, take the 'Bodge of the Year' award, hands down!!  That loose cable bouncing off the top of the tank would drive me bonkers, though.

Update.   If replacing the L/H brake cable is as easy as the kwnelson method, then I have no fear of tackling the O/S when necessary.   The cable passes behind the tank and the redundant cable is simply tied off with guess what?  Cable ties to prevent unwelcome clatter.   I have limited resources, 2 ton trolley jack,3 pieces of 4"x2" timber, car scissor jack, 3 bricks, open air sloping parking.   Not quite as refined as "essex2visuesi's" Ramp, big block of wood,2 smaller blocks of wood  [ no bricks to chock wheels].   However I do not agree with "bodge of the year" comments and consider that at 79yrs I am quite resourceful with dated but effective practical knowledge!

PS.     Car passed MOT today.   1 advisory,  corroded brake pipe,  will tackle that before next MOT.

Sorry, did not mean 'bodge of the year' in a bad way.  Sometimes a good bodge is a resourceful solution. Not above the odd 'bodge' myself.  You did the best you could with what you've got. AND you got the desired result.

Take a look at the rear suspension arm in the pic.... not all is what it seems  s:) :) s:)

I don't think Carolyn meant any malice by her comments
