Title: Not such a 'New' topic. Tyres.
Post by: Carolyn on September 25, 2017, 11:27
Input, please.

I'm contemplating new front tyres.  I have decided on make and model.  I'm now running the classic 215 rear and 185 front.  What is the view on going to 195 front?  I want to avoid any 'wandering about' in a straight line.

I'd preferably like to hear from those with experience of this swap.

cheers
all

I run a 195 front 205 rear.

Much improved over stock, and a lot less understeer.

would recommend!

You might want to point out which rears you run? Are you on the 16/15 setup or the 15/15 PFL?

I ran 195s on mine when I first got it. I dunno why, but the Bridgestone 185s are a little lighter at the front and I much prefer it that way.
Saying that, @Thewildone took some wheels off me at the weekend and put the 16/205s on the front and he said he much prefers the handling.
He is rather a "spirited" driver (as Jason would put it) and pushes the car to its limits.

I thought you were an advocate of the "Toyota said it was good, so it probably is".

16 at the rear, 15 at the front.  It's just that the tyre I want to use is not available in the right profile in 185.

Kate and I run 225 rear and 195 front. I really like this set up better than stock. Feels more stable and has more grip. Weights the steering up a little aswell

Thanks all, for the input.  I'll go for the 195 then.

Edit:  Tyres on the way.  Nankangs all round.  I love them at the back, so it should be good.

Agree this setup works well over stock

Done.  Had to wait for the refurbished front wheels.  I kept the same aspect ratio (55) which has made the tyres a tad taller.  This, in my case, is a good thing as I was getting tired of grounding my TRD front bumper.
Car does feel more planted and more stable in a straight line too.

Stock facelift tyres are:

185/55/15 front
215/45/16 rears

The correct upgraded sizes are:

195/50/15 front
225/40/16 rears

You should ideally be running a 50 aspect ratio on the fronts not a 55 although I think the speedo drive is on the rear - fronts are now +1.7% larger than stock.

My rears are nearly new 215 45s, so they're staying for now.  I am aware that 50 is ideal at the front, but when you keep grounding several hundred quid's worth of genuine TRD plastic, I deliberately went a little taller.
I am very happy with the way she feels.

There is really no such thing as upgraded tires and in many ways it's a downgrade by adding more unsprung weight with a wider tire.
I like the stock sizes the best because the car is far more lively and fun to drive. The car also handles just as good and the steering response and control is lovely. If you want more grip address what is wrong as I have found owners adding incorrect air pressure or having a bad alignment. If you still need more grip just buy a better tire or improve your suspension set up. If you want a dull responsive car add wider tires.

Agree and disagree.
The front is definitely less responsive with 195, and I have voiced on here that I'd consider going back down to 185. No longer possible now with my new wheels but that's a moot point.

225 on the rear definitely plants the car more on the rear. More rubber. It makes sense.

195 front made it very stable on motorway and fast speed.... Which I then consequently ruined by putting -2 camber to the rear and -1.5 front. But then cornering is on another level.

The costs; acceleration and efficiency for sure. Worth it though.

Stock setup is very very good and an amazing balance between grip, handling, comfort and being forgiving.

Horses for courses and personal preference. But if someone got in my car, drove it and hated it compared to their stock, I'd totally understand.

If I had been able to get my preferred tyre in a 185, I definitely would have.  Any comparison I make now is pretty meaningless as the old 185 was a different make.

The new set up is, for me, an all round improvement, but I'm sure a 185 (if I could get it) would be a little better.  I think we're talking pretty fine margins.... The car still handles amazing.

I ditched the tyres my car came with recently - two different brands of (so called) rubbish on the front, with wear at opposite ends of the spectrum and two rears with around 4mm on them.  One had two nails in it and they were the incorrect speed rating.

Replaced with a matching set of (Avon ZV7's) 195/50/15's on the front 215/45/16's on the rear.  Can't really notice any difference if I'm being honest, well nothing that couldn't be entirely in my own mind (if anything, it might have been better with cheap rubbish on) [emoji53].

From personal experience 205 is too big on the front even with turbo power.
225 on the rear was pretty good imho.
My current setup on the V6 which if I remember correctly is stock pfl size AD08R feels great but could do with a bit more grip on the rear hence I will be changing to FL size eventually.

I agree with Dev - contact patch size is mainly a function of car weight and air pressure in the tyre  - extra width just increases weight.
(but wider tyres generate less heat because they have less tyre deformation to make the contact patch - useful on track, less so on the road)

This is going back to my 306 days, but 195/50/15 was always phenomenally cheaper than 195/55/15, so if that's still the case, I'd be interested to go to your stated sizes as/when I need to swap mine  s:) :) s:)
