Title: Underbody protection service
Post by: mistajase on October 23, 2017, 20:53
Has anyone used in-n-out for their underbody protection service?
As one just opened up 5miles away from me.

 m http://in-n-out.co.uk/xpress-underbody- ... n-service/ (http://in-n-out.co.uk/xpress-underbody-protection-service/) m

With winter coming (and I no longer have a rear nappy), I'm a bit concerned of rusting issues... Expecially the cross-member.
For £35 it seems like a good deal.

Anyone here used them? Are they any good?

Never heard of them before but sounds like they spray 1 product over the whole underbody and as that could be a reasonable size amount of their product, then its not going to be a very expensive product. Probably just some form of thin oil?

I suppose you could argue thats its better than nothing?

Have you found any google reviews rather than their own ones?

Hmmm, sounds ok but I worry for that price, how well is it done?    s:crazyeyes:  s:crazyeyes:   I'm with you on this Simon, too good to be true?

The majority of reviews I found (Facebook, TripAdvisor) were positive (you always get a few bad ones, as you do with all chain garages) but I can't find anything/anyone that mentions the underbody protection...

I know it's not a one-time fix (they recommend treatment every 2 years), but i expect some protection is better than no protection.

For £35 what's the worst that can happen?

It might be worth speaking to them about what they actually do and what product they spray on.
it sounds to me like they stick it up on the ramp and just spray everything that is visible. This means that 1 product has to work on all the components which doesnt sound great to me.
It could be that they just spray old engine oil on there and that is why it is so cheap as they pay nothing for the product.

Downsides might be that spraying oil under the car may need cleaning off if you want to paint under there in future or that the product may wash off grease off the steering UJ or damage rubber boots or put oil where you dont want it.
These are all just the things that occur to me and not from experience though.

I've had the underbody of cars sprayed with an aerosol underseal by two independent garages. Supposedly two passes at 90 degrees to the other is the correct method.

Reading the website, it takes 20 mins.

Not much prep work involved then. Just what are they shielding from the process, if anything? I'd like to see them doing one (just not mine).

what do you want them to shield ?

Really bar the brakes you want it on as much as possible.

i'd guess they stick it on a ramp and just blast front to back with some sort of oil / wax ?

It has often been said that the key to success is preparation, as has you get what you pay for.
The time scale of this " service", I suggest, leaves little time for preparation.
The underside of many cars has a layer of dust and dirt that holds moisture against the metal surfaces making a good place for corrosion to start. The brake discs and pads and cylinders do not want to be sprayed with anything man made nor do the rubber gaiters of drive and steering mechanisms
When cars where not so well protected against corrosion as they are today under seal services were available, these typically began with steam cleaning and masking as necessary. The actual spray could be old engine oil (not advised  now we know it contains carsogenic substances) or a high build under seal paint product. Cavity filling was sometimes part of this process and again product could be old oil or something proprietary.

For the £35 I would be more inclined to buy two cans of Bilt Hamber or similar and spray the underside cavities front and rear.
Winter road dirt becomes a problem when de icing salt is used on the roads. When the temperature allows a blast with a garden hose or jet wash or garage car wash hose should clean that off.

This is an example of how it should be done properly as well as the costs associated with it.

Im thinking about getting something like this done very soon. Local Japanese performance mod oriented garage quoted me roughly £350-£400 to take off body panels, wheel arch liners, and do steam clean, wirebrush, and treat with 3M products (I didn't ask about specific products). I'd told him i was planning suspension rejuv and he recommended doing this first. I've also been reading a bit about media (soda) blasting, and was wondering if this offered any advantages (i.e. Is it quicker/cheaper/better? Not sure if the company doing the blasting does underbody treatments or cavity injection afterwards, so am I better just letting the local garage do wirebrush/treatment?
Would appreciate hearing from any body else who's had this type of work carried out by others/specialists, and any recommendations for specialists near Glasgow

I was quoted £470 by a local firm who stripped it all back and need the car for two days, looks like they do a thorough job. Wanna refurbished suspension first, it's on my wishlist to prolong the longevity of my 2  :-) :-) :-)

I went in to speak to these guys today clydesdale classic cars (http://www.clydesdaleclassiccars.co.uk) in East Kilbride to ask about options. These guys were extremely helpful, friendly and gave me a good deal of their time and advice today. They had some really cool restorations going on, including a 1950s Chevy, Reliant Scimitar, BMW 2002 & 850i, a Carlos Sainz Celica, a couple of Minis, and I think a Ferrari 308.
They generally tend to strip the car right down first, as J03 has done. It can get expensive though, especially if they find holes after blasting everything off chassis. Their advice was that for £350 wire brushing and treatment was fine, but might not get all areas and same penetration as blasting. Blasting was best method, but time consuming and expensive (disassemble, blast, prep, treat, reassemble).

Spot on, thanks for that  s:) :) s:)
I've messaged them, hopefully get a response tomorrow. Your "before" pictures look considerably less brown/orange/lumpy than mine, guessing my quote might be higher   s:lol:  s:lol:

Well that was fast. Mark replied half an hour ago. £600-£650 to remove underbody trays/wheel arch liners, steam clean/degrease, rub down loose rust, apply rust converter/leave to cure, cavity wax injection including sills/doors, and finally apply underseal (rust converter and underseal are both from dinitrol product range)

He says he has a custard MR2 in right now  s:) :) s:)

I'll be calling him later...

Wow, his prices have gone up considerably. Still, if the car is a keeper...

I might just happen to know who that belongs to.  s;) ;) s;)   Dropped it off at the weekend.

He's done stuff for me in the past (e.g. my M.X.5 Rf a few months back) and he's done a work colleague's car too.  Mark really knows his stuff and provides an excellent service.  He's a genuine car enthusiast too.  It costs a lot more than £35 but it takes days and is done properly.  The preparation is very thorough and he is a proper approved Dinitrol outlet.  If you're OK with spending a few hundred on getting it done, I can certainly recommend his service.

Brilliant! 3 endorsements from club, that's "sealed" the deal for me, if you'll pardon the pun (wa wa wa waaaaa    s:lol:  s:lol:  ).
I'm popping in Saturday morning to see him to book it in and talk about extras
