Title: Source of oil leak...
Post by: mistajase on October 24, 2017, 19:37
Just had some work done on my 2 yesterday (new clutch, rear bearings and aux belt).
Garage couldn't get the rear nappy back on (it's warped/damaged) so decided not to bother with it.... When I got home from work, thought I'd take the opportunity to check on the rear cross member (it's surprising in good condition, better than expected anyway! [emoji3]), but when I was underneath noticed a bad leak.

Garage never mentioned it, im wondering if it's releated to the work they did recently.

Can anyone identify the source?(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20171024/4f11fe626a280c7279e4c3ae2c90f00d.jpg)

Looks distinctly like the gearbox driveshaft oil seal isn't doing its job anymore.

Here's another image, I just noticed the drip...
Safe to assume its the (offside) oil seal then?

Any ideas how quick it is to replace? (https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20171024/b099f92f39c8200c6b683df96fc9fc47.jpg)

Couple hours tops. Depending on bolts playing ball.
Just needs a new seal and a new cotter pin for the 30mm hub nut.
And new gearbox oil of course. So about 50 quid tops all in?

They would drop the gearbox to replace clutch so drive shafts out.

This has probably caused it. Not saying its the garages fault taking them in / out of an old seal can always be iffy.

It might be because of the issue with the gearbox I guess. If possible try to change the oil also.

Going to have to change the oil anyway as half of it will come pouring out when you remove the shaft  s:) :) s:)

I believe that is the near side / left side of your 2.
