Hi all
I've had my '2 for over a year now and, like most of us on here, I love to drive the car and am mostly happy with the design and reliability. However, i've had the 'usual' problem.
1) Rusting brakes
2) Misting rear lights
3) Bubbling alloys
4) Hood 'ear' & poppers problems
Now, while these are relativly minor problems, I'm left thinking 'OK. I have all the minor problems the car is know to suffer from, so it's likely I'll have the MAJOR problem of'
5) Pre-cat/Engine failure.
'too'
I'd love to see some statistics regarding 1-4 above; i.e. how many owners suffer from these problems. Of course, Toyota wont ever do this and I can understand why people here may not want to collect this data with its effect on resale values.
Issue 5) of course is being skewed by all the 'pre-cat' gutters. But I'd like to know if all non gutted MR-2s will suffer engine failure at high milages.
I know it's easier and cheaper for Toyota to replace all these items under warranty and then, after 3 years, just say 'not my problem, mate'.
However, in the long run, Toyota's reputation will suffer.
I still think we users should do something - it wont help us, but will help others in the future.
I'm just not sure what we should do..
Regards
Stephen
As far as the minor problems are concerned, I'm not that bothered, they're all fairly ordinary problems, easy to fix. I've been looking at Lotus' recently and that really puts into perspective how well this car is made.
As far as pre-cats go, the only way we'll ever know is to get nationwide statistics of cars, ages and engine failure of any type. Cross referenced with other makes and models of the same ages. I believe the problem is not widespread, it just looks bad because everyone who gets one, comes here to try and get help.
Don't worry about the engine too much...it's fairly cheap to replace if it does blow after the warranty s8) 8) s8)

You Finns are too rich for your own good. s:wink:  s:wink:
Nice to know the '2 does OK there. I may take mine to Sweden.

It's just that the engine itself is bloody common, being in Celicas, Corollas and Avensis's (what's the pluras of Avensis anyway? s:shock:  s:shock: ). Local scrapeyard quoted 300-500 euros for the swap, including the new (used) engine and work, if they get to keep the blown engine.
Or if you want to spend more and get some performance with it, the MWR big bore kit should make this problem go away for good, if cutting the precats doesn't.
