Title: Steering Wheel Not Straight
Post by: jumbo on November 5, 2017, 20:47
I've just bought an MR2 and when driving in a straight line the steering wheel isn't straight (apparently the alignment has recently been done), could someone please supply an idiots guide to how to correct this, presume its going to be moving the wheel off its spindle slightly?

Thanks in advance.

The splines are surprisingly coarse - something like 10 degrees per spline, so if it's just a little off (which feels like a lot when you're driving!) then removing and repositioning the steering wheel won't help. It's not hard to do, but it does involve faffing with high explosives (the airbag) so... y'know.....

In all probability it's been aligned without the steering wheel being set straight. Surprisingly common. An alignment shop should be able to sort if for a few notes.

If the alignment was done at national tyres (Stafford) your wheel could've been upside down. Took my insignia back four times before they got it right.

Joe is spot on.  The steering wheel should be clamped in 'straight' position and the front alignment adjusted.  I just hate it when such a simple job is done wrong by a 'professional'.

Now that you mention it, exactly that, a new UJ has been fitted recently, how do I correct please?

Thanks

Apologies, I wish I could help - some other folks are having the same problem on another thread - I'm about to try this myself soon as well, so I've asked them to keep me posted when they sort it  s:) :) s:)
They were talking about it when I saw your thread, so I put a link to yours in theirs.

Thanks again, seems I'm not the first or wont be the last with a "wonky wheel", doesn't affect the drive but just feels strange.

Appreciate your input.
