Title: Bearing noise from aux belt area
Post by: stchris356 on November 8, 2017, 12:29
Hello guys 'n gals.
I have what sounds exactly like a alternator/tensioner bearing noise from the belt end  of the engine, but it's still present with the belt removed!

Just wondered if anyone has come across this before?

Thank in advance
Chris.

Rattles are very common from that area. If its a rattle type noise

It's definitely more of s bearing noise than a rattle, I was convinced it was a alternator/ tensioner bearing until I removed the belt !

It could be the chain a bit loose in its guides at idle.. though that's usually more of a 'rattle'.  How many miles has she done?

About 80k it's also a similar noise of a bad air leak!

Is it running well?  Is the exhaust manifold gasket leaking by any chance?   80k is time for a chain tensioner.  May or may not shut it up.

Yeah it runs, no oil leaks, had the rocker cover off and all looks well. It's a definite whine. When I've got some more time I'll have to look a little deeper [emoji16]

You're not that far away from me.  You're welcome to bring her to our workshop and three of us can see if we can track it down.  The manifold gasket would be an exhaust leak (not oil)...

not really sure of its name maybe pulley but one of the parts the belt goes around is a wheel / disk that's just bolted to the engine, on my 77 tho engine during its strip down we noticed this was very noisy and replaced it.

its a simple job except for the fact the bolt hits suspension tunnel whilst trying to remove it so have to drop engine on one side slightly !!

Stchris says he's got the noise with the belt off.  So not a pulley.
