Title: Chain Tensioner 10mm nut access & removal
Post by: delhusband on November 12, 2017, 14:16
Hi, looking for advice on best tools/method to get the 2 x 10mm nuts off the chain tensioner retaining bolts. Think maybe I just need a tall 10mm socket?  Tensioner is a pig to get access to with the tools I have.  My manifold heat shield is still in place, I guess removing it might give better access but I don't want to do that because the heat shield bolt heads look like they'll shear off if I try to remove them they're so badly corroded.

6 sided, 10mm socket with extension bar is all you need. It's just a question of angle..

Cheers chap. Sockets I have aren't tall enough to go over end of bolts - got the extension bar, just can't get socket over bolt. Oh well, another day.

Can be done with 10 mm combi spanner.

That's what I'm using. Must just be me. I'm struggling to get the angle to engage the spanner, get the space to swing it, and to see what I'm doing at the same time. Epic fail, useless fat fingers. Must try harder  s:oops:  s:oops:    s:) :) s:)

"and to see what I'm doing"... That's your problem!!

Seriously though:  Buy some long sockets.  They'll come in so handy so many times.

Cheers both, I'll pop into Halfords tomorrow lunch, I've been itching to do this job for a while now. New tensioner and the O ring from Carolyn both sitting on the workbench ready  to go  s:) :) s:)

If you're not in a rush to buy a socket set this close to Christmas I can send you a 10mm socket in the post, just send it back when you're finished.
I won't be back here till morning now though so no rush.

Gawd bless yer you're a gent, but no worries.  It's a bit of a shame, only just recently got a set of draper sockets for my birthday from Lesa, to replace the orange manky rusty ones I had before, but they're all short. I'll just get a new set of taller ones, had more than a few similar issues in the past so they'll come in handy, as Carloyn says.
