Title: Alloy wheel bubbling – Toyota not offering to help
Post by: poprock on November 13, 2017, 10:08
Hi guys.

I've been told many times that if our alloys start to bubble and suffer lacquer peel, Toyota are happy to swap them for new wheels.

So, I've noticed that mine are starting to go. I've contacted my local Toyota dealership. And they've said no.

Does this sound right to you?

QuoteUnfortunately, Alloy wheels are only covered for corrosion within the vehicles warranty period.

Yep, sounds right to me.

I'd been given the impression they replaced faulty alloys as a matter of course. Something about the wheels having a much longer manufacturers warranty than the car. It did seem too good to be true ...

Umm even the bodywork only comes with a 12 year anti corrosion warranty.
Practically every roadster except 06 cars are past that now.
If they wont change people's subframes then I doubt they would give you a set of wheels.

I've had 2 brand new sets of alloys on my car under warranty claims from my Toyota Dealer.  Mind you I did buy it from new in 2004 and both claims were made within 2 years of being fitted.  The current set of wheels were fitted in 2007 I think, and still look pretty good with no bubbling or corrosion (mind you I do look after them!), so Toyota did improve the quality in the end.

You are correct in that Toyota do offer a warranty on NEW alloy wheels i.e. those fitted to a new car or subsequently replaced but immediately proven faulty as in my case.  However, as Scotte has said, this does not apply to wheels off a car that is at least 12 years old - if that was the case, we would all be driving around on new wheels provided by Toyota.   s:wink:  s:wink:

See, from anecdotes when searching old forum posts I thought you were all driving around on new wheels provided by Toyota!

Glad to have it put straight, ta.

I recently saw a Celica that had very similar/ the same style wheels to the OE 2 wheels.
All traces of paint and lacquer appeared to have eroded away and left a plain, slightly rough alloy surface.
It would appear that if you leave the OE wheels to finish there bubbling they will then be ready prepared for refinishing.

Also the guy that refurbished my wheels reckoned he had never seen a broken Toyota or Lexus wheel. Unlike BMW or Audi of which he sees loads.

Run flat tyres (popular on BMW) and over zealous tyre fitters are an ideal combination for damaged and cracked alloys....
