Title: Solar trickle charger with EOBD socket connection
Post by: StephenBennett on December 5, 2017, 10:35
Hi all

Anyone using one of these through the EOBD socket?

 m https://www.amazon.co.uk/AA-Solar-Power ... ry+charger (https://www.amazon.co.uk/AA-Solar-Powered-Car-Battery-Charger/dp/B00AC1LLQY/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1512470023&sr=8-3&keywords=solar+car+battery+charger) m

Does it work with the MR-2? Any issues?

Stephen

I have a solar trickle charger but it plugs into the 12V socket rather than OBD socket, not used it on the car but am trying to revive a battery by trickle charging it off the car - mine seems to give a good voltage even pointing out a north facing window and cloudy etc. Not sure I would want to run power back through the OBD socket as that would be using a much lower current than via the 12V socket for example.

I used to use a cigarette lighter one on my campervan. You need to remember to unplug it before starting the engine and you need a socket that is always live.

The one I had output a max of 0.3 amps iirc.

I never got a flat battery so I guess it was doing something.

Not sure about the difference of going through the obd port though as no exoerience of that.

The Customer Reviews are very mixed, don't think I would buy after reading them.

I have something similar to keep up the charge on my Race Transporter.. Been on there for four years.  Does not need to be disconnected, however.  Lots of boat people use them.

I would be very wary of anything charging the battery through the EODB port.... Its not deigned for power to run in that direction and with direct feeds to the ECU I would be doubly cautious

I believe you can't use the cigarette lighter on the '2 as it's disabled when the car is stopped.

Thanks, everyone.
