Title: Ignition key won't work
Post by: roobefrover on December 15, 2017, 13:33
I don't have the master key anymore as it disintegrated. I have a copy which worked but now has stopped working. can someone help please as the car is stuck on my driveway. I got a electrician who specialties in cars to come and see and he couldnt help. Recognized the factory fitted immobilizer was the problem and they can't be sorted! Any help gratefully received. I have a 2001 MR2 Roadster, which I have owned now for two years.

That's a problem.
If you have no more master keys, you can't assign new keys.
Patrick (headcase) might be able to help.
Sure you don't have the old master lying around?

Would the internal part of the master key still disable the immobiliser if it has enough battery and was close to the copy of the key? Eg strap the body of the master key onto the copy?

The imobiliser chip is the size of a grain of rice and doesn't contain a battery - it's energised by the coil around the ignition barrel. The battery in the remote is for a separate transmitter to arm/disarm the alarm.

Can I bypass the immobilizer? I don't have the master key anymore.

The starting system uses the small chip in the key, no battery etc so the one in your old key should still work.  A auto key person may be able to read it and make a new one for you.

The immobiliser is separate and uses the big electronics pack in the two button key. You can register the immobiliser pack if you have a plain key with a working chip.
