Title: Toyosports or other manifolds?
Post by: MR2Adam on December 19, 2017, 12:54
Hi all,

Im not at the point in my MR2 ownership where I want to rid of the pre cats. But I want to know what's the best decat Manifold to get. At the top of my list is the Toyosports manifold.

But are there better ones? Let me know!

Hamish sells one like the Toyosports, but better, and cheaper all in all.

Zero is amazing, top notch, but priced accordingly (450)

PPE has the most proven gains but will require custom cat piping and o2 bungs welded in. And super pricey as well.

Stick with Hamish's

Cheers for the advice.

I've heard of Hamish before, any idea of where I can get in contact or buy one?

I would get rid of the precats ASAP, currently running a decat manifold, no issues with the MOT or emissions, keeping the precats on the engine is a bit like leaving the oil in past its service interval - its probably ok but might cause long term damage.

His username is hamspeed, has an affiliate page as "GarageFiftyNine" and is on Facebook as Hamish Hodgson

Cheers!
Also, how much louder would the car be when you havea standard with a decat Manifold?

Depends on the manifold. Hamish's will have a bit more of a rasp with maybe a bit more rumble.
Same for the zero. Never heard a PPE with a decent cat and exhaust so couldn't say.

PPE is louder that any other setup I've heard and y takes some taming running it through an open system. It doesn't need 02 bungs welded in either, just use the single sensor and supplied loom extension.

That was it.. Something to do with o2 sensors  s:) :) s:)

Is it loud with the PPE 200 or 400 cell?

With a standard silencer, you won't notice any difference in exhaust note.  I have a Toyosport on my MR S with an aftermarket cat and standard silencer, and I think it might actually be the quietest Roadster around.

Odd. I've definitely found the Toyosports to be noticeably different. Mind, you've got your engine running very quiet  s:) :) s:)  Maybe it's that hehe

Actually that's what I'm looking for funny enough! Looking to keep the car quite quiet as it'll be my daily driver.

How is the Toyosports manifold working out for you as that's what I'm leaning towards getting for my car

I love it.  Good thick steel gauge and quality welding.  I know there's a worry about not having a supporting bracket, (which Hamish's one does have) but mine has been fine without.

I know, it's not fashionable, but there's something to be said for a quiet car than can shift just as well as a loud one.  (if not a bit better).

Maybe we can get some converts    s:P :P s:P

Trying to quote Patrick....

I agree the Toyosport is 'different', but I don't feel it's louder.

Brilliant! Thanks especially for putting me at ease about the lack of a support bracket   s:D :D s:D

A slight difference in noise would be great but to have the quietness of it really appeals

I'm the same-ish and you can hear mine coming down the road for a mile. Different definition of quiet we have  s:) :) s:)

Can barely hear mine pulling in the driveway....  It's subjective, of course, as my hearing is no longer the best.

Edit:  Bear in mind, it's a good idea to wrap it before you put it in.  Helps with engine bay heat, performance, and kills a bit of resonance.

Ah, I had an RX7 and a Mk 1 MX5 with a modded exhaust - the MR2 is quiet in comparison, alternatively I have gone deaf which is also possible  s:D :D s:D  but I do have a hard top which does make it much quieter inside!
