Title: Clutch replacement.
Post by: Call the midlife! on February 27, 2018, 20:21
In readiness for when we put the new clutch in, is it advisable/straightforward to fit a new input shaft seal while the transmission is off the engine?
We'll be replacing driveshaft oil seals as a matter of course but wondering if it's worthwhile having the input shaft seal to hand anyway.
And if so does anyone know the part number offhand just to save me some legwork, although I'm sure Paul at TCB will know it anyway.

I don't think people generally do.  Not a common failure, I believe.

Thanks for that, I'm on 105k so it was more a preventative measure if we're only talking £15-20 worth of seal while it's out, if you know what I mean?

If you change it you won't worry about it, if you don't change it you will......

As in "why not while we're at it?" That was my "Dad logic", that's assuming we're only talking that amount of money but with driveshaft seals being around the £15 mark I can't see the other being that much more, couldn't find a part number last night but it was a very half-hearted search![emoji23]

I had the seal fail at 80K miles a few years back when I thought it was the clutch, due to time constraints and a pending holiday I had to use a dealer - it was 1pm on a Saturday afternoon. This is where it gets a bit confusing as I was told to replace the seal it meant stripping the gearbox as the seal is fitted from the inside rather than pressed from the outside around the input shaft. Always felt I was ripped off on this as even know I am not sure on the seal fitment technique. Cost for seal added 400 to the cost.

The link will show a 2006 Toyota Corolla 1zz clutch and main seal replacement, around 4.5 minutes into the vid it shows the main seal being removed and renewed.

I needed to check for that engine, but I believe you were well and truly ripped Norman.
It may be that there is a specific Roadster vid but I do hope I don't need that detail just yet.

I think you have misread the issue here my friend that's the crank seal behind the flywheel, I talking of the gearbox seal totally different beasts. I still feel ripped off though.

Yeah, the shaft seal is inside the box and I'm reliably informed not easily damaged as it's in a sleeve etc so it's staying where it is until it ever needs replacing.
Thanks all for the input though.

Sorry for my misunderstanding Norman.
