Title: Cam chain tensioner
Post by: lamcote on March 16, 2018, 21:30
Hi, can I just check whether people use any kind of sealant (if so what) when fitting their new tensioner or do you just rely on the rubber ring?
Thanks

Just the O ring for me.

The O ring should be sufficient.

I've got some new EPDM non-metric ones if you want one, PM me with your address. :)

Thanks.

Carolyn, you sent me one of the previous version you had, thanks, presumably that's OK to use?

Yes, but the EPDM is easier to install on the tensioner.  It's more elastic. A couple of people have really struggled with the Viton one.

You're welcome to one.

Thanks but amazingly I managed to get it on no problem, must have been a fluke, I guess I would probably have more difficulty taking it off to replace it!
Thanks again

Carolyn also generously sent me over an O ring as well - I had a spare tensioner from a lower mileage engine - my engine is on 175k miles and probably the original tensioner. Swapped it out which took about 5 minutes (4 of which was taken trying to get the original one out after it was stuck to the block with all of the baked on oil!) - all sealed up now, listened for the click to make sure it had engaged and took it around the block for a test drive.

I thought I had an exhaust rattle - seems that I actually had a failing chain tensioner as its now much quieter.

Carolyn,

If you still have any spares would you mind sending me one? I wrestled a Viton one on the other day and it's not sealing - I wonder if I damaged it in the process. If you have, I'll PM you my address. Many thanks.

Did you clean out the hole in the casting with wet and dry?  400 grit, thorough scouring....

The EPDM ones exhibited swelling, so we're back to Viton.  Send me your address and I'll post one.

You mean the hole in the block that the tensioner fits into?

Thanks, will PM you.
