Title: Mr2 smashed up. ( well,bruised and battered! )
Post by: Dan MR2 on March 17, 2018, 15:01
Some nice van drivers decided to reverse into my mr2, whilst queuing in traffic, because he couldn't be bothered to wait and wanted to turn round!!
My wife was driving at the time luckily no injuries to her or anybody, but I'm left with smashed up front bumper, and the shut lines on the drivers side wing are massive, down the door and bonnet.
I claiming of his insurance, but I guess they will write it off won't they?
Hope they don't it's a 52 reg, nothing mechanically wrong with it, crossmember in prefect condition, newish red roof from jack smith, 10 mot and only 74000 miles, just got to wait to here back from them.

That is rough. Glad to hear your wife is ok.

Chances are it will be written off. I crashed mine a few years back needed a headlamp, bonnet, wing and a correction to the panel under the headlamp too. Car was £2.5k at the time.

Indeed.  Wing and bumper can be had for very little.

I've just been reading up on buying it back, I don't think it would be worth it, by the time I've paid to have it fixed, resprayed, then it says you have to pay to get them inspected, higher insurance costs, it doesn't look like it would stack up.

If the damage is only to wing and bumper, ones in matching colour can be had from Dean at Rutland MR2 for around £100.  Both simply bolt on and bolt off.  No need for paint.
Really a DIY job, honest....
If the chassis is bent... different story.

That's a real shame. Glad everyone is ok. You can buy it back and strip the decent bits for your next one if you don't fancy repairing.

The drivers wing looks in perfect condition, it's the panel gaps that are massive, like it's being pulled by the chassis, passenger side shut lines are fine down the door and bonnet.
I've remove the fruck cover, can't see see anything majorly obvious, apart from the seems either end of the bonnet catch slam panel, have slightly come apart from the supports which join to the top of strut towers, if you know what I mean?

And when you get it back modify the hell out of it so you can insure it for decent money and then they're less likely to write it off.

Hi Dan, really sorry to hear your sad news but pleased no one was hurt.  It would be a shame not to save it especially if it's just panel related and nothing more serious.  You'd miss it if you didn't have it. ;)

Glad the Mrs is okay.

Sad about the car and the idiot that reversed without looking properly.

As above buy her back and put her back on the road  :)

I've seen the photographs your lady put up on Facebook.

I'd say 'battered and bruised' rather than 'smashed up'.

That can be economically repaired, I think.

Yes, I hoping it can just be repaired, see what the insurance say/ pay out, etc. If I had the parts I could easily fix it myself.

You can have the bumper for £20 but would need to check on prices to courier due to size, unless you want to sort courier to collect.

I would be interested at that price if I'm going down the route of repairing the car, is it a complete bumper? eg. Grill, and that dimpled plastic bit you mount the number plate to, etc.

One of my vans was involved in a really bizarre car park accident which resulted in both front & rear damage. It was wrote off but we had it back and managed to repair it for the write of value of £1800 so it ended up costing nothing. The only inspection we needed afterwards was to get a new MOT.

Wing and bumper = 2 hours work. I can't imagine how a van reversing into an MR2 could do anything worse that cosmetic, unless he was really going for it or hit the wheel.

Just fix it and keep it.

Little update, the insurance company are going to repair the car!, new front bumper, plus spraying etc. I really did think they was going to write it off with it being 16 years old.

That's good news for you Pete.
As we have been known to name and shame some Insurance Co's ( to no avail!) on here perhaps you could name the enlightened co's involved in the decision to save your 2.

I did a spell with a body shop group. In terms of cost it is sometimes less of a loss to them to repair a cheap car. The numbers actually work better for the to scrap off a merc or Porsche because they can sell it off for a good price

Who's Pete? Lol.
It's being repaired by the van drivers insurance, a broker called Gladiator. There pretty good really, I've used them in the past when I've had my own vans.

Sorry about that Dan!
My late brother was Pete and our eldest Grandson is Dan, so all good names, as to why I used the wrong one,  I had earlier been reading a post by Sombrero Pete!
Very pleased for you.

Not guaranteeing they'll be the cheapest - but get a quote from PaisleyFreight - I've used them LOADS of times for car parts and they're very cheap! They collected and delivered a full S-Line bodykit from Aberdeen to London for less than half the price that anybody else wanted just for the delivery. Used them for alloys and tyres a few times too.

Another update, didn't go ahead with the insurance company repairing the car, I didn't trust the garage they was using, I've had a big pay out off them instead, the cost of the repair the garage quoted, kept the car also, and it's not cat D registered or anything.
