If I put 16" all round, is it going to work OK?
Yes, others have done this before.
Maintain the stagger through the tyres though.
What he says.
What you mean the stagger? Wider at the rear?
yes
I have been running 16x7 wheels all around for years. Tires are 195/45-16 front and 215/40-16 rear. The only issue is tire selection in those sizes is pretty limited.
Forgive my ignorance but does that not mean I need to find alloys that are staggered in order to put wider tyres on the rear?

Ignorance forgiven :-)
Follow this LINKY (https://www.mr2roc.org/forum/index.php?topic=24453.0) to the OE wheels specs.
You'll notice the standard width's of the FL and PFL. Yes, the wheels are wider and narrower front to back, but the standard 16" wheel only came in one flavour.

From the chart ^^^^^^ you see that you can run as narrow as 195 on the front and wide as 225 on the rear. Happy days.
So the sizes that @Beachbum957 (https://www.mr2roc.org/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=25058) post are valid. :-)
Hope that helps explain.
Oops wrong thread.
Cheers mate, great annotated explanation! Many thanks
@michaelb (https://www.mr2roc.org/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=24962) No Probs, I did have to have a lie down after that unusual moment of clarity! ;)
I run 16"x7J wheels all around. My car is probably slightly over-tired with 205 section at the front and 225 section at the rear. With the standard engine I'd probably go 195 at the front and 205 or 215 at the rear.
I've run it on 205's all around and it was fine on those too.
