Title: What plugs and coil packs for 2zz
Post by: HFB on March 25, 2018, 08:24
My recent bad purchase of a 2zz conversion is throwing up yet more little surprises!

Now it seems I have a misfire in cyl 3 which I expect to be a coil pack.

Thinking of replacing all 4 plugs and coils.

What is the oem suggested parts and part no's to do this and would anyone suggest better options for performance/quality?

Thanks

HFB

From what I've been able to glean:

Plugs one grade cooler (NGK 6 instead of 7 for 1zz)

Coil packs are longer on the 2ZZ.

You can use the numberplate 'KY53 ZHW' for parts searches if you like. 2003 Corolla T-Sport. I had NGK iridiums in mine - not sure if that's worthwhile or not over the standard plugs (which my new engine has).

That's ok then.
Secondhand plugs would be silly imho.
Coil packs less so though not something I would do myself.

Bit pricey though when looking to replace set of 4 at around £170 each for Denso OEM ones though!!

Agreed they are expensive.
Although when I buy secondhand parts they have a tendency to either fail or be in bad condition.
You can get brand new ones for around 60 quid although they won't be denso.

Looks like they are more like £107 each:

Looks like you can get a cheaper aftermarket one:

Where are you based? I have a spare used set if you wanted to try them to see if it cured the misfire?

Thanks for all of your advice and help guys (and your very kind offer m1tch).

I have now cured the problem (until I discover the next one!) and sourced a set of 4 Denso coil packs from ebay of all p[laces. £70 for all 4, from UAE of all places. Bough Monday, arrived Wednesday! Fitted and spluttering cured.

All I need to do now, when I have some time at the weekend, is establish which of my coil packs have broken down because the 2 centre ones, with cracks, didn't cure the issue. Only when all 4 got replaced, did it stop spluttering and playing up. At least I should have a couple of spares now!

I did notice when removing the old coils though that 2 of them were missing the rubber dust collar around the top.......could this have also contributed to the issue?

Now can get on with cleaning the MAF sensor and tidying up some of the shocking wiring at the weekend!

:)

As a side note, I was always of the impression that cheaper, non Denso coils were a bad idea for these cars????

Stick with it Mel. I think alot of people who buy a modified car end up having to sort out a few niggles. It will be a cracking car when it's sorted.

It's certainly cheaper than converting one yourself but maybe more of a pain in the arse not knowing  what's been done or how it's been done and then having to sort it out.

You will get there and you have already added some very nice bits.....just need to get the little bugger to run properly!

From MAG engines, perchance?  Got my 2ZZ injectors from them...

It will work out in the end Mel.
My V6 swap was down right dangerous when I bought it but it's a lovely little car now and even with all the Dosh I spent still only cost the price of the engine swap.

Re the coil packs if you are happy and they work then it's all good.
Had a coil pack go on the 1mz didn't care what make the replacement was as long as it worked. 12 months warranty with any new parts.

The only thing I insist on being genuine DENSO would be 02 senors and the MAF.

Got my injectors secondhand from the states refurbished again at least 12 months warranty.

Yes it was as it happened....(didn't even notice that TBH). I take it that's a good thing if you're buying stuff from them Carolyn?

Thanks for your words of support Scotte, will keep that in mind re Denso sensors.
