Title: 1zz turbo vs 2zz turbo
Post by: shnazzle on March 27, 2018, 16:29
Following on from Dan's thread;

Differences between a turbo setup on 1zz vs 2zz...
Discuss!

One of the points was whether a t2554 turbo would flow enough for a 2zz.

My calculations show me that it wouldn't (I didn't expect the 2zz to flow that much more!)

1zz flows about 22lb/min whereas 2zz 26lb/min.

The t2554 at 10psi is well within max efficiency at 22lb/min but at 26lb/min the 2zz is outflowing the t2554.

Conclusion.. No can do. A gt2860rs seems a perfect fit though.
So if yoy want to turbo your 2 with the likelihood of going to 2zz, get a gt2860rs :)

Another discussion:
What suits a 2zz better? Supercharger or turbo?

First off I think you still want bigger than a gt2860rs.
If you can control the torque a 2zz will make 350 on stock internals.
Something GTX or EFR if you have the budget.

I know nothing about roots superchargers apart from I wouldn't want one.
Eaton's TVS aside.
Also don't touch any of the TRD blowers if you want more than Toyota thinks they can handle.
A Whipple would be nice.

Rotrex centrifugal.
Never driven a Rotrex 2zz.
The one on my V6 does very little below 4k.
Now this works well for me because you've got buckets of torque and it drives pretty normally. Until 4k where it goes mental.
Hopefully blag a ride in a 2zz rotrex one day and see what it's like.

That's why I don't like centrifugal superchargers. It's like having all the bad of both worlds of forced induction, with the benefit being ease of install.

Whereas a positive displacement of some sort would basically enhance the torque profile of the otherwise torque-less 1zz and 2zz.

The gt2860rs is the equivalent of the t2554 on the 1zz I think. Good up to about 270ish. Which is the most I'd want.
For what the 2zz is capable of, yes a bigger turbo would work rather well. But then there are other limitatiosn like gearbox etc.

So assuming stock parts, just bolt-on, I'd still opt for 2860

It all depends on what sort of engine they are mated too.
Rotrex is not like other centrifugals either.
Roots blowers can turn into blow torches and give nothing up top
My rotrex runs so cool you can touch it.
And screams tongue redline.

Have you drive a car with a centrifugal blower?
Not many people have.

Rotrex suits the nature of a 2zz & associated drivetrain down to the ground.

There's far too much emphasis on torque these days, tbh it's always seemed like a sticking plaster for bad driving in my eyes  ;D ...Runs & hides

Certainly relaxed and even possibly lazy driving. Like torque.

There's not enough emphasis on torque these days, tbh it's always seemed like a utopian ideal to effortlessly blast around with 200bhp & about the same torque on tap; Oh well maybe one day;D Runs outside and howls at the moon

I fixed that for you!

I have not. Purely going on graphs etc. Definitely something I'd have to experience.
There must be a reason the rotrex is such a popular option

Typical Rev head attitude.
Without torque there is no BHP.

If Patrick is happy with his 240-270 then turbo away.
But a rotrex gives big numbers no torque spikes easy install low intake temps and doesn't generally kill your engine if it dies.

Hey I love torque, my daily is a straight 6 & I want a v8 next  :)
Relaxing & effortless, but generally a bit boring.

I'm purely stating what suits the 2zz  engine better. A linear delivery keeps it singing & the adrenaline levels bubbling  >:D

Forgot linear.
Even when it starts to boost around 4k it ramps up rather than just soar.
Had no grip issues and am only running 205 rear AD08R. 265 ft-lb :)

Going to hatton park scott? We can take each other for a spin!

I don't think I even know where that is.
Hatton Garden I know.
Avoid it at all costs.
HWMBO loves shiny.

The 1zz has a longer stroke so you will get more low down torque, however you won't be able to rev as high (even if the valvetrain is upgraded) as the piston speed due to the longer stroke is very high.

Also worth noting that so far I have found on my 1zz build that parts are quite hard to come by unless you are in the US - worth also noting that the main studs as well as the main bearings are the same between the 1zz and 2zz so you can then get 2zz race bearings for the mains - big end bearings are 1mm different in size.

Looking at something like a GT30 sized turbo for my build, using the Borg matchbot it seemed to show the engine needed around 42 cfm at 21psi and around 50cfm at 28psi.

Can a 2zz or 1zz feasibly flow that much?

I am guessing so, the 2zz will have an advantage as its already a very good flowing head, my cylinder head will need a bit of work to get it to flow well, just going on other 1zz builds it would seem the built engine builds run 350+.

It will probably be easier to make more power with a 2zz as the rods will be fine, flip side is that the 2zz will need sleeving to run aftermarket pistons owing to the MMC bore.

In terms of RPM, the upgraded valvetrain and Crower cams are rated to 8,500rpm.
