The back box/silencer part of my exhaust is functional but has seen better days so I'm looking into options (and whether it's worth doing anything).
Does anyone have details of the sprung flange that joins to the cat pipe? It looks like some kind of compensation or ball joint, but I'd rather not take it apart just to find out at this stage as the bolts look like they'll have to be written off. I'm assuming it's there for a reason and a simple bolted flange with compression gasket won't cut it?
Many thanks
It has a composite slip-on doughnut thing that allows movement while providing a seal.
Bottom right in the pic. Generally comes with the cat....
You can often re-use the one that's on there.

Thanks Carolyn. Presumably that means the pipe leading to the back box has some sort of flaring internally, to make the seal at the cat pipe?
Yes it does. The doughnut is pretty robust, but will burn away a bit if it's been leaking.
You won't know until you open it up.
Btw: These back boxes are also pretty robust. A wire-brushing and some galvanising paint might just buy you several more years??

Probably the best approach, less time fiddling and more time driving.
Sorry for hijacking your post, but can you buy just the bolts and springs on their own? I have a new donut ring supplied with my rebuild kit.

You can but as with all things MrT they're not cheap! The OEM ones don't always fit with aftermarket manifolds etc either.

I have a stainless manifold but will be using a standard cat and silencer for now. Any recommendations?

For bolts? I'd wait and see how the current ones measure up before buying any new ones, I bought a set of new ones when I fitted a replacement catback and they were no good due to the flange on the new box. To be fair the Fox came with full fittings anyway, just not sprung bolts.
