Title: Leaving soonish
Post by: Chilli Girl on April 21, 2018, 21:27
Of moving on!  I know that you will all think I'm mad but I shall be selling Foxy.  I've had a further two years and 8k miles after I sold Chilli which I have enjoyed but I can't justify nor afford owning two cars.  Space here is also an issue.  I was looking forward to driving her tomorrow to Taunton after not using her for a little while and yes you guessed it, battery flat.  Cars need to be used so it's with regret Foxy will be up for sale but not until we've been to Ding Day, I can then say my goodbyes and my thank yous to you all for your help, it's a great club. ::).  :'(

@Chilli Girl (https://www.mr2roc.org/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=15489) and what if we don't agree with your decision?

As a strong part of the community I think you'll find that you need to get your decision approved by the committee, after a club referendum, with all forms filled in triplicate!!

All you need is a trickle charger job done !

Do you really need the more practical car?
Can't you just sell that instead?

In total agreement with the above comments, so that's probably more votes for you to stay than have been cast for the PB Memorial Trophy!

Again, at the risk of some abuse, may I suggest keeping Foxy for summer use only. In that way you will save £120 pa on Road Tax. That would buy you a battery/ trickle  charger, (remove the battery if necessary to avoid  extension leads to outside if that is a concern)
The £120 should also get you part way to a car cover if she's parked outside during the winter.
You may also find that Foxy is helping the insurance cost of your other car if with the same insurer, two cars can't be insured as cheaply as one but there are some benefits.

As this "decision"  of yours follows shortly after your musing about refreshing Foxy's suspension, I'm sure Mr Freud would have something  to say about this change of direction!
Especially as you've publicised your " intent"  on here, knowing full well you will never get "permission"

PS. Please also refer to my posting of 21 April.

and  / or a £4 batttery isolator (as recommended by Carolyn)

The following sounds very much like "conventional wisdom" which IMHO very often doesn't stand up to close scrutiny

I can't justify nor afford owning two cars.

I currently own 6 vehicles (3 cars, 3 motorcyles) which I can easily both justify and afford (okay a couple of them i should really get rid of  ::))

None of them cost that much (average purchase price £2500) and at the time of writing only one of them is taxed and insured (my current "insurance" for the 2 involves a hefty lock through the back wheel and living somewhere where nothing ever happens).

My essential philosophy is that (done properly) owning 2 cars is cheaper (and because it is cheaper it is thus easily justified  ;))

The reason it can be cheaper is it avoids the paying a big repair bill 'cos you're desperate to get your car fixed trap that alot of car owners seem to fall into as you can instead in theory just tax and insure car "B" (e.g. your MR2 in winter) giving you time to explore options with fixing car "A" which (even if you are getting someone else to do the work) can save a fortune once you are talking engine or gearbox rebuilds versus sourcing good second hand units........

I seem to remember Loadswine tried selling his roadster recently  :-)

Thank you for all your replies guys, it means a lot and I have taken on all your comments.  Well as we speak, Foxy is linked up to a trickle charger, there, you see, I do 'eventually' take on board all of the excellent advice on here, just a pity I didn't buy a trickle charger when she went flat last time!  Is it just a case of leaving it on charge now until I use her please?  :withstupid:

Let her trickle charge away, the more intelligent chargers are designed to stay plugged in - that will be a purchase for me this winter coming as fed up with a flats battery,

So with the battery fixed and the temperature back to normal UK there is nothing to stop Foxy fighting another day - who needs AC anyway!  Last Thursday I drove 210 air conditioned miles back from the Midlands to go out for 40 Dartmoor miles in the MR2.  I know which was best and think you do too....

Wouldn't be the same without you, Foxy and perhaps even the frog (niche reference)

FOXY IS ALIVE TONGHT!  Trickle charger worked a treat after 24 hours on charge.  Just hearing her start up and tick over for a while was music to my ears.  Unfortunately, I couldn't go out as was waiting for my Mum to arrive.  Hoping for a run to the New Forest on Thursday to meet up with a couple Mum and I know so looking forward to a 50 mile run which will also help the battery I hope!   :-\

So you've reconsidered leaving I hope? :) on a purely selfish aside Jane, who'd cheer us up on our birthdays with a personal message of best wishes if you left?

If that day ever arrives then I'm sure the path to your door will be well and truly trodden.
