Title: Idle RPM
Post by: michaelb on May 4, 2018, 21:34
I noticed when my 2 is warmed up fully, the RPM at idle drops to about 700-800 but occasionally it drops below this, almost feels like it's about to stall, then comes back up again to 700-800. Anyone else found this?

Nope. That ain't right.
Could be any number of things.
All basic service items up to date? Air filter, maf, sparks, oil, o2 sensors?

Does it idle OK at first and gets rough as it warms up?

It only does it very occasionally. The idle to me seems a little low though, or is 700-800 about right? It's been well kept and I recently had it looked over but one thing it may need is spark plugs

650-750 is considered normal. I'd think anything under 750 is quite low

I'll change the spark plugs. Have you any experience using the iridium or titanium ones? A mate told me they make it easier for the engine to flood.

MB
I've had that, gone, as soon as it came and only very rarely. Wouldn't worry about it.

Could you ask your mate, how and why it will flood easier?

I change my plugs every year. Do they "need" changing? No. But my last lot of NGKs cost me £ 7.75 DELIVERED!!!
so why not.

Just in case you are wondering. They require 25nm of torque.

Or, tighten them gently until you feel the washer start to crush, then give it a tad more. I think I maybe a bit old school  ;)

Which could well equate to 25nm.
Either way, it's not a lot.

The guy is a mechanic and he just said that a harder spark plug can lead to increased chance of flooding. I know nothing about these things so just nodded politely and said "I see" in a very understanding tone lol

Wouldn't worry about the idle.
