Title: Flexies in exhaust
Post by: michaelb on May 18, 2018, 17:05
I was getting new lowering springs fitted today and when I picked the car up the guy said that my exhaust flexies needed replacing asap or there was a risk the exhaust could crack. I've never heard of these, anyone able to confirm? He said I may notice the smell of petrol in the cabin and if I do, to put the windows down right away to avoid carbon monoxide poisoning

He's a bit dramatic but he's right if they are gone. The flexies are between the manifold and cat.

Are they expensive to replace? He said he thought he'd have to order them in and they would be a nightmare to fit

Think it's part of the cat pipe on these cars, can't see fitting being a nightmare apart from the three bolts that might take a bit of effort.

Yes they're part of the cat. I'm sure they can be cut off and replaced, but not sure if that'll be cheaper and easier than a new cat.

What ^^^^ they said.
Think a whole cat assembly would be cheaper.
Thens its a bolt out bolt in affair.

Might be symantics (or not) but I would have thought if you could smell petrol, something else is not right.
The the petrol has been burnt by the time it gets to the flexis. Zorst fumes, yes, Petrol ????

Slightly off topic, but I replaced my main cat last week with a Cats2U product. Just under £140 delivered including the fitting kit and gaskets

When I get chance I'll be taking the old cat to a metal recyclers - I'll post up how much they give me for the old one, but it should offset the price of the new one nicely. Worth checking your local area for metal recyclers to see if/how much they would give for the old one

They're at the rear of the car, I think he's confusing this with a standard front engine car that would have pipework under the full length of the car, unless you drive every where in reverse it's a bit of a stretch of the imagination.
With regards to the flexis, I was recently quoted in the region of  £250.00 to replace as they apparently need to be put in a  jig to be kept in the correct position for welding  :-\ a new cat is much cheaper.

What's the consequence of not changing them?

Keeping the money in your pocket.

From your original poat. "there was a risk the exhaust could crack. So right now, it hasn't.
By all means monitor them, but this is not something that these cars are known for.

And if they are, get a complete cat. Cheaper.
