Title: Sticky stick
Post by: Joesson on May 20, 2018, 20:07

This may or may not be news for you, but just maybe it will be useful to one of you.
I removed the side vents to clean out the drains and, as I have seen reported on here , managed to drop one of the white clips into the wing cavity.
We've all either heard of or got a magnetic stick to pick up suitable metallic bits dropped into the abyss but these are a plastic/ nylon material.
So I came up with a "Sticky stick" any suitable stick/ wire/ rod with a piece of double sided tape (or gaffer tape folded back on itself ) to form a sticky flappy bit on the end.
It worked a treat so drains cleaned and all clips replaced.

Nice invention.  It depends on what you are trying to pick up but I have used an alternative for a similar kind of situation.

Halfords had changed a headlamp bulb but the glass part of the bulb broke away from its mount during the change and dropped inside the headlamp housing and they left it like that.  Getting the full headlamp assembly out would have been a big-ish task but the bulb hole was too small, and the broken part too far from it, to get fingers in to pick up the bulb and extract it.

Solution?  I used some duct tape to stick a about 40cm of siphon tubing to the end of a vacuum cleaner so that the tubing was like a long, thin, flexible extension of the vacuum nozzle.  I switched on and poked the tubing through the hole.  The broken bulb stuck on the end and I was able to extract it easily.  There were a few smaller bits of broken glass in there too and they could either be drawn out by the same method or just sucked through the tube and into the vacuum cleaner.

In honour of this thread, I think I'll call my invention the sucky stick.  :)
