So this came to me recently and I've been pondering and doing a little research. (Not a great deal)
After reading Carolyn's thread on the mini supercharger. And doing my own turbo conversion. What about an amalgamation of both?
I want to get a spare engine anyway and that will be forged.
So...twin charged 1zz?
Apparently because of compounding effect or something two 10psi appliances would effectively give around 30psi.
I'm interested more from and engineering size than anything else but instant power from the supercharger low down followed by turbo higher up? Sounds fun to me.
What's the thoughts on this.
Has it been done?
I believe a good place to start would be the VAG TSI engines? I think they are super & turbo charged...
That's what I looked at. Small engines with two small chargers. Would be interesting. Lol
I think the biggest hurdle would be finding space for both a supercharger and a turbo (and an intercooler) plus all the plumbing, in the engine bay.

True. But that's what makes it an insane engineering challenge. Lol
Just went out and had a look, it could be done, but mating up the two intakes would very problematic.

It's been done for sure on a mk2.
Bloody hard work and totally unnecessary with modern turbo or supercharger tech.
Would be a laugh but the headaches would be huge.
Build 2zz and stick efr 7163 to it, no need of twin charge :)

I'd love an outlandish car. One that gets a "wtf is going on in there" when someone sees your engine bay.
I get that engineering is making things as simple as possible. And there's other ways to get more power.
But if you stick to the"best" ways, people don't come up with the crazy.

Im in for the crazy ideas and i do have some but i dont have the tools and skills to make them happen so ill relay on somebody else to do it and its lots of cash their way. Id not twin charge but would stick 2 EFRs to a v8 :D
Twin charging has already been done on the engine, I don't really see the benefit to it as the compressed air from the first stage will be rather hot to then feed into the 2nd compressor to get even hotter - better to just get the right sized turbo or supercharger for your goal.

Well I have seen a charge cooler that uses the air con gas rather than water.
That would give some epically cool temps

Yeah I know about those....you will need the extra power to lug around the aircon setup, plus the aircon probably won't fit in the engine bay as the supercharger usually uses that bracket.
Leaving aside all the engineering difficulties and cost just for a momment.
The big problem you run into will be power to weight imo. How much of the instant power do you expect to really use - the rear wheels on my car will spin all the way through third already! The Murikans refer to this as "Layin it down" and "gettin it on the floor". Uneven, frequently damp roads mean you reach the usable power ceiling really quickly - way before twin chargers power will ever be realised..

I don't know how much power he got but he seems to have it back to front. You want the inlet air to go through the supercharger first which gets the nice big turbo spooled up early. He has the supercharger bolted directly to the inlet manifold so it must come after the turbo so you get a much smaller benefit at the bottom end and then overwhelm the supercharger at the top end.
This is why the big problem is packaging, I doubt you could find room for everything if you get the layout right?
