Can anyone identify this? see picts.
It looks like a cover and can be pushed back into place but falls out and sits on the right side drive shaft after driving.
Looks like a drive shaft boot that had parted company with itself to me.
Its a dust cover for the driveshaft seal. Haven't seen a loose one before.
Dab of glue?
Thanks for the quick reply's.
If a dab of glue will hold it back in place, do I put the glue on the inside or outside, so glue it to the seal or the casing?
Also what glue would work well?
Thanks.
As it's a tap-on cover, a little careful bending of the lip with pliers should make it resume its grip.
Thanks for the reply's.
Bend it in to grip the seal or bend it out to grip the casing?
I just took a look at one on one of my cars. It doesn't go on far enough to touch the casing, so it would be gripping the seal.
If you're going to glue it (which might be a good way to go, you'll need some serious stuff capable of bonding rubber to metal. Make sure the surfaces are clean first.
IGNORE THE ABOVE!!!!
I've now looked at a spare drive-shaft I have in storage. The inner lip of the piece sits tight on the fat part of the driveshaft. It DOES NOT attach to either the deal or the gearbox. It rotates with the shaft.
Do you know what holds it on?
It's a press (interference) fit. Again a bit of fettling with pliers on the inner edge and then and some judicious use of a small hammer should get you there.
Thanks for all the info but I am a bit confused whether it rotates or not.
If it rotates with the drive shaft it will be pushing on the seal which does not move, if it attaches to the seal it will not rotate.
Can someone double check to see if the dust cap rotates with the drive shaft, rocking the car back and forward should do it.
It is not meant to touch the seal. It's just a cover that hovers above it.
Here's a pic of it on the driveshaft.
Thanks Carolyn for the info, can anyone else confirm the dust cover rotates with the drive shaft?
If someone could look on the actual car with it all fitted and rock the car, that would be enough to confirm one way or another.
I pushed mine back on and it has stayed in place but is not rotating, so sits on the seal in my case.
I just went out side and rolled the car a little in gear. Yes it turns with the shaft.
I do tend to give pretty reliable info, and I have really tried. Asking for 'anyone else' is a bit rich ;D
I'd try to bend it to stick on the shaft or just cut it off, as it doesn't really do much.
Not trying to question the reliability of your information just trying to confirm it with someone else.
As I said mine is staying in place now (but is not turning with the drive shaft) so the problem is resolved for me, but anyone else watching this thread will be confused.
MOD - Carolyn has given some pretty clear advice and a picture that is far from confusing, she is very well qualified too - The inner lip of the piece sits tight on the fat part of the driveshaft. It DOES NOT attach to either the seal or the gearbox. It rotates with the shaft.-
