So after having a knocking noise, burning oil, and getting it investigated at Drift Limits Performance, I basically need a new engine. Crank bearing and / or big end damage.
Anyone have any advice and rough cost on where to source a 1ZZ including fitting? I'm in Amersham , Bucks.
My other option is a 2ZZ. What are the costs involved in this and who can do it near me?
Many thanks,
J.
Not all that close, but well worth a visit (or a phone call) to Dean @ Rutland MR2 for the standard 1zz
Ive not used them, so cant vouch for them, but i keep seeing these advertised on ebay. Theyre potentially not that far from you.

For 2zz sj autos and Rogue motorsport are regularly recommended, although a little far away.

Thats a good point! I forgot about Deano...
James he's about 90 mins away, I'm sure you can get just a bog standard 1ZZ from him.. it's possible that whatever you get might be a slight oil burner which isn't the end of the world.. but it would get the car back up and running again.
Josh made the below comparison thread a while back - it's worth a read if this is your time to sit back and tack stock of what you want to do:

oh and just so people know - drift limits is Luke's new place (what use to be Pacific Works).
Here we go again...
The classic syndrome of a battered 1zz.
A decent 2zz conversion will show no change from £2500, and could well cost much more. No point in putting in a used 2zz, (that hasn't been opened up and refreshed) 'cos they all been thrashed (nature of the beast!) Then you have to ask "Do I want a 2zz in my car? It's a marmite decision, some will say 'yes every time' and others will say it's really not the way to go. Best to drive one and see what you think first.
There's a very good chance that you could get your own engine refreshed with rings, honing, bearings and valve seals for a little more than you will pay for a used 1zz. Any used engine you buy will be a bit of a gamble as even the most honest breaker (Dean at Rutland MR 2, for instance) can't be sure about oil consumption as he won't be putting a couple of hundred miles on it prior to breaking, and as it's not always obvious if an engine is an oil-burner or not. (You don't get blue smoke). You can go for a later low-mileage one if you can find one, but even that is still a bit of a gamble. So even a used engine ideally should be opened up and inspected before it goes in. You can, of course get lucky with a straight swap for a used engine and have no issues....
A good used engine will cost £400 to £500 plus another £400 or so for removing your engine and replacing it.
What a few of us have done is buy a dubious engine and re-build it and then do an engine swap. A remove/rebuild/replace job will cost around £1500 for a proper job with a new clutch and all the parts that should be refreshed, if you pay someone to do it for you.
I got a 40k engine 04 vintage from Dean and had it fitted by a guy he knows in Peterborough
Around £1k with a new clutch, belt etc
All good after 1000 miles, it's worked for me

So essentially if you KNOW you have to spend in the region of £1-£1500 to pay someone to put a decent 1ZZ in for you, I guess you need to balance that vs going down the SJ auto route which would cost £3k plus VAT. So at least an extra £1.5K to someone to do that for you...
We've recently had indisputable evidence that the 2ZZ is NOT just a 1ZZ up a higher rev limit etc, however I believe it has taken a standalone ECU and skilled tuning to provide this evidence. What I'm saying is that they are two different engines, the 2ZZ being what many describe as what the MR2 "should have had", if you're gonna spend some money put some time and research and co-driving time into making sure you're spending in the right direction for what you want.
A great opportunity to do this in Shinding day (Early Aug in South Oxfordshire so nice and close!) (see the events section) where lots of people with different variants will be about and you can get a ride along and see what they are really like.
Thanks guys really appreciate all this info.
Im stuck between trying to get my engine fixed / getting a used one and refreshing it or getting a new 1ZZ.
I don't think I can afford the stretch to a 2ZZ. Besides I have a fiat coupe 20vt for my fast acceleration kicks.
What ever I get I want the new design pistons in there.
What does everyone think about the eBay ads mentioned above?

Whether you rebuild yours or get another rebuilt, the pistons can be modified to deal with the oil-control problem, quite easily.
A 'new' 1zz fe is usually a reconditioned 1zz fe.... and the 'supply and fit.deals can be a tad misleading.
You engine has to come out. So have it taken out, cam cover off and pan off and have it inspected. If it's a good candidate, you might as well rebuild that which you have?
If it's not a good candidate, you've not lost much.
If like me a 2 is for life not just to the summer get it rebuilt by a reputable mechanic.
If it's just a passing phase take a chance on an engine from Dean.
If it's just a CAR to you then just bin it. :o
Me I would cannibalize that fiat coupe for it's engine that would be some 2. >:D
The 2ZZ is not as expensive as everyone makes out, I paid 450 for mine with 60k miles. Did the chain and lift bolts etc but yeah even if it's been ragged and it lasts 20k more miles, I'd just get another. It's a 2nd car to me so that might change things.
It takes a weekend to swap the engine it. Another week to sort the other bits out. I wired it myself, if you can read you can wire this no problem.
Hardest part is exhaust, buy the manifold and connect to existing system to get you on the road, then look at getting the full potential with a full custom system.
I've just done a track day with mine and it's a great all round car, got a bit of interest even when McLaren and a Ferrari racing team show up. It won't try to kill you like to Clio's do.

So I'm currently looking into this 2ZZ engine swap. Think I've found a good 190 celica for the donor car.
Looking for the other bits I might need now to price it all up. As mine is an mr-s I take it I'm gonna need a celica jdm ECU?
You'll be fine with the ecu from the Celica.
Do your homework, 'cos there's gearbox and shifting issues to consider. There's a 'basic 2zz swap' and then there's a 'proper' 2zz swap.
Big difference in cost and in the result you get.
Talk to MikeK... he'll give you the scoop.
Here is a checklist from Monkey Wrench Racing - they have all the parts but are usually too expensive due to import costs etc:
https://www.monkeywrenchracing.com/tech-mr2-s-2zz-swap/
Also speak with Rogue motorsports which does a drive in, drive out 2zz swap.
Happy to help if I can.
You can get all the swap parts from patrick chambers (headcase) if you are doing it yourself. I highly recommend Megillian motorsport for manifold and exhaust.
Please don't skimp on the manifold or gearbox.

As above using the 1zz ratios or a crappy manifold ruin a 2zz swap.
Mike's is a good swap there are some out there that are lacking.
So after having a bit of a think, I can't spend the best part of £4K right now on the 2ZZ.
So I think I'm gonna try one of the eBay supply and fit guys.
There's x2 near me. One listing says:
Says:

The other is the same but with new pistons.
What you guys think?
'Grinded crankshaft' ?
I'd want to be sure exactly what is being done for what price. Taking the old one out, swapping over all the ancillaries, and putting the new one in and commissioning it properly. On top of that you would want to use a new clutch and new engine and gearbox oil.
Make sure all of that is in the quote - in writing.
I've heard bad things about those ebay outfits... tread carefully!

Guessing probably a reground crank 0.25mm and oversized bearings fitted for correct oil clearances on a used crank.
It also states new piston rings so if they are reusing the old pistons the engine will have the same oil burning issue (and the wrong piston to wall clearance!).
Thanks so much to all of you for your help and advice. Really appreciate it.
So I picked up my mr-s today from Alan's garage in Peterborough, with a swapped engine ( fsh, 89k miles) that's actually a facelift engine courtesy from Dean at Rutland mr2 ( a top bloke) , new clutch, full service on engine. £760 all in.
Big thanks to Alan, Dean and Jack.
All good so far on the 80mile journey home!
Loving my car again!
I can totally recommend these guys.
Wow, sounds like a bargain!

Whilst I don't disagree with the sentiment here, you should know that I put a used 2ZZ into my car. All I changed were the lift bolts and standard service items.
It drove completely reliably for 3+ years over many, many track days and numerous continental jaunts - I had zero issues with the engine. No oil consumption either.
If you do your due diligence, you can pick up a car with a looked after 2ZZ for not much money.
So for me, there
was a point in putting a used 2ZZ in, because I was clued on, and smart about how I did it...
