Title: Sounds like something catching in gearbox/drivetrain when driven not coasting
Post by: silveromriver on September 4, 2018, 13:03
Hi to all fellow MR2 peoples. I have a 2000MY 5speed done 84K recorded genuine miles with history and all MOT's.
Very recently a sound starts a like a tick/click noise, slow at slow driving speeds gets so fast becomes a grumbling sound.
Cannot be heard when coasting or when clutch is dipped. Sound is from the rear of the car and amplified with hood raised.
I have lifted the car and took off rear road wheels inspected for stones/debris in discs/calipers all are fine and clear.
The car had new discs and pads about 6K miles ago all round and these still look as new. No obvious play in wheel bearings or drive shafts.
Anybody any ideas? all suggestions welcome.
Thanks

How are your disc protector plates?

I get a similar noise at times and my feeling is that is something to do with the fact that some are rusted through and may be rubbing behind the disc but I have yet to investigate.

If it's only under load would that suggest a failed engine mount  that's possibly letting the engine tilt too far and cause some misalignment somewhere?
If it doesn't do it when coasting you could more or less discount most free spinning parts such as brakes, wheelbearings etc?
I've heard tell in the past of the plastic (flywheel?) cover becoming part detached and flapping around.

Sounds like clutch release bearing to me. Very common & nothing to worry about, just change it when a new clutch is required.

I read that wrong, thought you said it can be heard coasting!
